This domain has been in my possession for some years now. It has a website on it, but lately I've been slacking on updating its content and graphical bug in firefox.

Recently a domain broker contacted me telling me they offer $5,000 for this domain. This amount is a bit too low for my taste (mainly due to personal attachment). I'm a programmer and not a businessman. I'm leaning a bit towards contacting a domain broker, but the amount of scammers out there is gigantic; hence this post here.

I've done quite some googling myself and found out some saleprices of recent two-letter dot-net domains:

XS.net- $13.000 T.R.A.F.F.I.C., november 2006
CD.net- $20.000 T.R.A.F.F.I.C., november 2006
PO.net- $10.000 T.R.A.F.F.I.C., november 2006
SO.net- $13.000 T.R.A.F.F.I.C., november 2006
Lv.net- $10.000 KuwaitNet, february 2006

These aren't two of the same letters like ff.net, but I can imagine CD.net being a wonderful name as well. pc.net is for sale for 80k I believe, but since that's not the selling price I'm not too sure they will actually receive that kind of money.

Last, I'm a bit confused by using stats to decide on the value of my domain. It sounds a bit silly searching for two f's in google - of course I get 133 million results, its not a word! Judging from the stats on my website most users end up with my domain because of "Final Fantasy", "FireFox" and "Fan Fiction". I get a gigantic amount of traffic from the last one, since its huge community nearly all shorten fanfiction.net to "ff.net"

At the moment my domain has a PR of 4 (used to be 5 when I frequently updated it). I serve about 100k pages a month. According to a backlink checker I have 989 backlinks and an overture of 14462 (for the term 'ff', heh. 147 for 'ff.net').

Any thoughts on how I should procede further would be appreciated!

A double-letter .net? I think this could hit $20,000-50,000 with relative ease. $5,000 is an insult.

Nice one there...I agree with everyone above.

20k easy reseller, more for enduser..

I'd say $5k is a joke of an offer. More like around the $20k

5K is an excellent first offer. Its not a joke or an insult.
You should continue negotiations if you are interested in selling it.
You might concider bringing in a professional negotiator to
represent you. But don't make a counter offer or any commitments.
Encourage the buyer a to raise his offer. Make the buyer identify
himself and his company and get a phone number and address.
Never negotiate with an unidentified person.

Definitely at least $15K. Don't go with the $5K.

The 5K are a first offer and not an insult. Now it's up to you to decide if you want to sell to a reseller for somewhere around 20 - 30K or if you want to wait for a good enduser offering high xx.xxx or even low xxx.xxx

Great domain!!!

20K

A 5K offer is not insulting, it's just starting the ball rolling.

Thank you for the advice all. I'm first going to inform possibilities regarding taxes in my country before I start thinking of what I want for this domain; my country deducts between 50%-60% of whatever you receive as income, which is a lot.

It seems that you all agree 20k is a good "I want to sell it fast" price, but a potential end-user will be much more profitable. I have patience however and do not need quick money.

The domain broker company that is representing the person wanting to buy my domain gave out all his company details (address, website, phone) already, so I consider that good form indeed.

At the moment however I'm more leaning towards letting the domain redirect to a new coming project of mine to increase traffic/clicks if all I can get is 20k as "quick buck", meaning only 15k euro, 7.5k euro after Dutch taxes.

Again many thanks for your input.

$20,000 - $50,000+ This is a rare 2 letter .net, The fact the the two letters are the same adds value to the domain, $5k as an offer, i would metaphoricly wipe my ass with it. E-Mail the broker who offered $5k and insult him! Only joking, Excellent name though!

Humm...
This seems like exact same email I got yesterday for my QV.net
I countered with "try adding one more zero" :)

My guess is that this broker is contacting all LL.net domain owners.
So, don't get your hope too high ;)

Was his name "Roy"?

It was! Seems he's trying every double letter .net address. Since hes "spamming" owners I figure I can just paste his e-mail to compare it with yours - is it a copy-and-paste? here goes:

Good Morning:

My company is involved in the acquisition, development and subsequent
sale of top-level Internet domain names. We have a client who has
expressed an interest in acquiring FF.net. She has authorized me to
contact you and convey her offer of $5000.00 for the transfer of the domain.

She is prepared to act quickly; if you accept her offer, we can
render payment to a third party escrow company usually within one
business day and, on the whole, these matters are concluded within 7
working days after agreement has been reached.

As an aside, you should know that in all our transactions, our buyer
is responsible for the payment of our commission and the payment of
the fee for the escrow service. The are no hidden expenses to you.

In the event that you are not inclined to sell at this time, kindly
let me know and retain my contact information for future reference.

Best wishes for your continued prosperity.

Sincerely,
Roy Sidewitz

Ironically, I bought a LLL.com from Roy - and turned around and flipped it for $4,500 profit in a few days. He is a real person, just obviously trying to get people's names for cheap. :)

Haha thank you, this saves me a lot work in trying to figure out what to ask for my domain. Nevertheless I have learned a lot from all the replies here and will try see if I can increase my knowledge on this field. As a programmer the business side is always tricky, yet fun to explore. I'll try see what reply I will give him. My position just increased by a tenfold with this information, thanks!

One last question - are there well-trusted auction/sale websites for domain names, or should I just wait for new/more e-mails?

lol I just sold Roy a bunch of domains. He bought 25 NNN.cc's off me for $50 each, plus he gave me 26Q.com and YERX.com. I don't see it as a rip-off for me. I bought the NNN's at $10 each so I made (and I received the escrow check yesterday) $1,000 and possibly $300-500 or more in trades for a $250 investment. My overall profits should be over $1,000. Not bad since I had no desire to market the NNN's and I paid so little for them. I think I profitted well.

Good for you ;)

I never said he is a scammer and/or trying to rip-off anyone.

I did say he's looking for idiots :)
But, again, he may reply back with more legit offers.
You never know.

Hint:
Fantastic Four sequel coming out.
You might polish up some skills in approaching end users; a common practice is to place a name for sale/auction at Sedo, ebay, etc., then approach likely end users who may have a use for the name, and let them know where to place their bids. You can also look for a domain name agent who can help you approach end users and broker better deals for you. Check around Namepros, start a thread, if you want to find a reputable one.

Great LL.net. Two 'f's very usable to a variety of large organizations. 15 - 20K absolute minimum, considerably more if you do things sharply.
Good luck. Nice name.
