Few questions about domaining

I just started getting into it, and i had a question about something. Right now, since im new im leaning towards domain parking for revenue. I have the basic concept down for it.

Lets say i bought my domains for 9$ a year and park it. In order for me to break even on my first quarter earnings i would need to make 10.8C a day for a 28 day calender month. after that its profit.

Ok so 3$ a month is not that much. but lets say you reinvest that money and much more and own say 2000 domains each bringing in 3$ a month....

I understand that the revenue created via parked domains has many variables. thats fine im just using examples. Is this approach something that has potential?

also im thinking on parking with activeaudience.com I like their ad style.

thank you for your time

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
GoDaddyGoDaddy
Check out Parked.com

Too, you might want to think about developing your own personalised parking pages, start with a web editor like KompoZer to put the sites together and when your done, put Google Adsense on the websites.

Both of these options could do better for you.

As for names, be careful as a newbie what you buy, read up on everything you can first - either here or at DNJournal.com

You will find this place particularly helpful and 99% of the posters here are very friendly and do not mind imparting some advice.

Best of luck.

Mark

PS On page 2 of this newbie section, I put up a thread entitled, if you want to learn a lot quickly, listen to these - open that thread up and listen to the radio shows there. NamePros too apparently has it's own radio broadcasts somewhere, not that I've found it yet. :)

thank you for your reply. i already have an adsense account set up. As of now i will just park the domains to see if my crazy plan has potential then i will branch out from there.

I have read up on some content on this site which was VERY informative. i will be sticking around for sure.

your plan has merits the trick is finding domain to reg with traffic, even 2 or 3 views a week if north american/european traffic can be profitable, dont forget there are more and more domainers coming on every day who have the same plan as me and you build slowly and increase our portfolio with earners. i am only about 20-30 percent where i need to be and slowly increasing my portfolio

ok, well

the domains i bought are new. so how would i get traffic to them. also, when i park with parked.com or any other vendor is it all optimized for me? or do i need to deal with meta tags for key words.

first of all welcome into domaining.
It would be great if domain on first month of registration would bring 30% of cost back. Normally brand new parked domain does not make much, unless it is typo, misspelling etc of something nice. Advice would be instead of spending money on registering 2000 domains (where lots of registration fee involved) to spend money on registering/buying just one good name and developing it into something big.

Thank you for your opinion however there are issues with this approach. One, I'm lazy. and two I'm not an avid coder. Sure, i can read/code in php/html/css and JS but it is usually not formatted correctly and explodes in different browsers. Unless i somehow could create a template to fire up on my sites and use google ads. Not to say that your opinion is not valid, Don't get me wrong. That approach im assuming has worked for countless others = )

Patience is one thing i do have. I expect the return on my domains to be nil or nothing for quite some time. as far as 2000 domains that would be over a 4 year period.

For now, just here to get my feet wet. I really like this site btw. And i really appreciate the responses im getting.

Think of the quaility of the name you could buy with what the reg fees would cost on 2000 names ($7.15 x $2000 = $14,300). One quaility name could easily bring in several hundred dollars per month. Buy the best name you can afford and reinvest those profits into more quaility names.

Making $3 a month on a cheap name is not very easy.

I too like parked.com

ok, may i ask what is the average price on a domain that would bring in say....100$ a month and are we still talking parked?

wow :) you are talking about domain that worth at least 12x24 times the monthly amount it makes.

Most Trademarks names that have issues sell for 6 -24 month revenue, I dont no many domainers with quality generics that will sell for less than 5 years revenue, and many look for at least 8-10 years revenue.Unless they were previous websites where traffic will die off eventually. you mentioned earlier how to get traffic to names that are already regged, while some times if you park them seo will pick them up and get some traffic the key is regging names that already get traffic if you are going the regging route instead of buying domains. If you go the buying route trust very few domainers or there stats lots of shady people who manipulate stats so unless you are one who can analyze traffic before purchase i would ask a trusted source first unless its a real obvious traffic getter.

To clarify, the point of my post was to buy quaility over quantity. Reg fees on 2000 names could be much better invested in decent names to begin with.

hey, thanks alot. Very informative. another quick question is, does traffic on new regged parked domains build up over time naturally? or do i need to initiate it somehow

You make it seem like it is so simple just to hand reg 2000 new names and they will automatically bring in a few bucks a month each. This would be almost impossible. It is easy to say "all I have to do is earn 3 cents per day and the names will be free" but it is much harder to do than you think. I would not hand reg a single domain if I were you. Just stick to buying like 5 or 10 names for $1k - $2k each and spend a little on development. You can find names that already have traffic on the forums and other places for sale.

NO, unless you registered a GENERIC domain, which is really very very hard to find. Usually you park used domains, that had traffic when there were a website on it, or you park a typo domain of a website, that have a good traffic, and you hope for visitors, or you park brand new domains that awaiting to be developed.
