Help I am newb! :O

Hey guys I am new to domaining and was wondering about a few things. First of all what kind of names and dot-extensions are good to get into now, obviously I'm a late on the (dot)com buzz but I've been hearing some good things about .mobi and .tv

also I don't have much money to invest so I was basically thinking of looking up good names for reg fee and snatching them up, but I noticed tons of the good ones are already taken. Are all the 3 letter .coms and 3 number .coms taken right now?

Also, should I concentrate more on getting domains and reselling them or maybe parking them and getting ppc money from ones that attract traffic like typos and other things people put directly into the address bar...

sorry im new and probably going at this the wrong way, hope to hear some good things, thnx! :]

IMO .tv is the way to go as they are now recognised as the official domain extension for online media. There are still some gems out there you just have to find them! All the good .com's are taken unless you manage to catch a good one on the drop. As far as LLL and NNN.com's yes they are all taken. You may as well forget those unless you have a few thousand $'s to spare! Unless you are buying domains to develop then you are obviously looking to make some money from them. Most of us buy them, park them and wait for a buyer hoping we will make some money in the meantime (at least the renewal fee).
Before laying out any money on domains you should hang around the forum for a while and see what others are doing. you will pick up a lot of tips and valuable info from others on here.
Good luck with your domaining and welcome to namepros.

Len.

great thanks for the quick reply

also, why does .tv have a higher reg and renewal fee than other dot.things ?

If you reg with Enom you get tools included with Me.tv to create your own website .tv channel. No other ext provides anything like this! The prices at the moment are around $25 which is actually discounted from what they were. The premium prices have been set by verisign and reflect the demand in the market for popular keywords.
If you think that the $25 for a hand reg is expensive just take a look at some of the other lesser known/used ext ie tm,fm,am,pl and vc just to name a few and you will see that they are not.

If you are new in the business I wouldn't advice to take the plunge into .tv.
It's a specialty market and the fees are substantially higher than .com for example. For so-called premium domains the reg fee can be extremely high.
Example: $500,000.00/y for news.tv (not joking).
Welcome to the world of differential pricing.

As for .mobi I do not believe in it at all. IMO the TLD is only good if you can flip them for a quick profit... some domainers have been doing quite well.
It should be considered a high-risk extension.

All the LLL .com are regged since 2000. Reseller pricing begins at $3000+ and up depending on quality.

If you have a limited budget then registering available domains is probably your best bet. Keep an eye on the available domain lists published here and elsewhere. There are some very decent combos available but it's like sorting the wheat from the shaft :)
Unless you are lucky you will not get high traffic with fresh registrations overnight, unless the domain has previously been developed and has backlinks for example. So PPC will not make you rich with new domains.
It takes money to make money so my suggestion would be to identify available domains with good business potential and pitch them to resellers here or directly to end users... I regularly sell domains at Sedo for mid-$$$, within the first year of registration.

Bonus: scroll down for a few domains that are available right now :)
IMO there are a few good brandable/developable ones - just to show that with creativity you can make up good combos.

I'm not going to try to tell you what to do but wouldn't it be a good thing to get a couple of .tv's and park them hoping that they will bring you some money when you sell them? That's in MHO.

However, whatever you decide good luck with it.
