British Telecom is currently trialling new fibre-to-the-home broadband technology in parts of the UK.
This new technology will enable users to get up to 100 Mb/sec speeds for downloads and a 2 Mb/sec uplink. Costs are reasonable, currently at £28.45/month ($57/month) which isn't much for a new technology, as prices will go down as more and more people will be using it.
I know that many Internet users in Japan are already getting these 100meg connections and that these new technologies are being trialled in many other countries over the world.
As much faster broadband speeds will be available and as bandwidth will get cheaper and cheaper, this will help the boom of online video in general and .tv sites in particular.
We definitely need these new technologies in order to see a real convergence between the Internet and TV, as this will only happen when we'll be able to get live streaming of high quality video at a reasonable price for the website owner/developer.
We should expect many great news and new opportunities in the online video market and in .tv in the years to come as these new technologies will be available everywhere and will completely transform the user experience when it comes to video online.
If you think that online video is just Youtube as we know it now, you ain't seen nothing yet !
