Hi all, what's the difference between the $10 and $12 starting bids at the GoDaddy expiring auctions?

Expiring auctions start at $12 and last 12 days. If it is not sold it moves to buy now with $10 price dropping $1 a day for 5 days.

Hi Erdinc. What I am referring to is if you click on the "Domain Auctions" tab, on the right side there is an Advanced Search. If I select from the predefined:

-"Expiring" (which automatically selects "Expiring Auctions" under the Type heading)
- Then select # of bids and select exactly 1
- Then click search

It will return auction results with one bid that are either $10 or $12. It says it is an "expiring auction".

This is different than the closeouts.

I bought a couple closeouts yesterday fresh after auction. They seem to be starting at $9. With a coupon, .org's come out to $16 and change.

Yes, you are right. Some expiring auctions start at $10 while others do at $12. I couldn't see anything different. Maybe they are dropping prices.

I also like closeouts more than the standard expiring category.

Well, yesterday I picked up a domain I really wanted at GD that the bidding started at $10. I suppose it doesn't matter really in the end, but I'm still curious why there are two entry price points for the expiring auctions though.

Why do you like the closeouts more? Cause it's buy it now?

As you like to say, those names have already been filtered through 1 stage.

And going into that concept a little further. You've mentioned that pending deletes are mostly leftover pickings, right? That 2/3's of the domains (is that right) have already gone through a pre-release phase. What about all the names that don't go to GD, Snap, Namejet, Dynadot, and Name... those are good for backordering, right? Do those 1/3 of names get shown at namecatch.com?

I can only bid on auctions during the last few minutes because if I bid earlier people who sort the lists according number of bids can see the domain I want. I don't want to rise attention to a domain which others otherwise wouldn't have noticed. Instead bidding early, I would rather not bid at all and let it go to closeouts.

My biggest problem is that I forget about auctions. I tried taking notes on a piece of paper. I tried saving the domain details page as a bookmark. I even sometimes set up my alarm clock but still I manage to forget the auction ending.

I'm working on a technical solution to help domainers and myself with this issue.

I calculated the numbers a few times. Yes I can confirm that at least 66% of all pending delete dot coms are already auctioned during pre-release.

There is also name.com which auctions their pre-release on their own site. I found 64% in my calculations excluding name.com which will bring the number to 66%. This is those that I know.

There is also a site called Gabia which also auctions their pre-release on their site. They have few domains as well.

What about all the names that don't go to GD, Snap, Namejet, Dynadot, and Name... those are good for backordering, right? Do those 1/3 of names get shown at namecatch.com?

Yes of course they are shown on namecatch. They are included in the "pending delete" section. It is actually technically possible to differentiate pending deletes that were already auctioned during pre-release and those that were not. However they are all put in the same basket.

Because a domain was auctioned during pre-release and wasn't picked doesn't necessarily mean it is crap. Many domains go unnoticed during pre-release because less people check them.

If you download the pending delete list and check the registrars you will see domains from all registrars including Godaddy, moniker, enom, network solutions. You can of course backorder a pending delete Godaddy domain from snapnames but this is not a very smart thing to do because you will pay $59 and the same domain was available to purchase on the Godaddy website for $18-$20 USD 45 days before you saw it on the pending delete list. Considering that Godaddy has %35 of all dot coms, that is a lot of domains. The pending delete lists are overcrowded with junk.

You have twice the chance of finding a quality domain in a pre-release list compared to a pending delete list.

Quick question domain expiry from a newbie:

I see from above if a name on the godaddy expiring auction goes unsold it goes to closeouts. What is the process and how long before the name becomes available to register from any other registrar ( dont like godaddy too much and others might be cheaper) assuming it doesnt get bought at the close out. Also if you are buying at the closeout lets say $9 or whatever what other costs are added to the final price of acquisition?

Thanks for your time

Hi tj1897,

I posted this in another topic here which was not related to Godaddy. So let me copy it here:

I'm glad you liked the information. I will provide a little more information and numbers and I will explain with an example to make it easier to understand.

Let's say example.com has expired and it was registered with Godaddy. What would happen to that domain?

Day 0: example.com has expired. It was registered with godaddy. About 35% of all .com domains are registered with Godaddy. The day the example.com expired it was auto renewed by the registry Verisign for free for 45 days. The same is done for all .com domains.
Day 24: example.com is put up for auction at godaddy.com with a starting price of $12 plus reg fee. This makes $20 with coupon codes. The auction will last 12 days. Godaddy calls these auctions "expiring", while I call them "pre-release" to keep consistency. The auctions are run here:
https://auctions.godaddy.com
You need to select the "expiring" category. These are freshly expired domains that have expired 24 days ago. They are still under control of Godaddy because of the auto renewal which was originally planned to give the previous owner a chance to renew his domain after expiry.
Day 36: example.com auction closed without any bids. Godaddy has now pushed the domain to "buy now" section which they call "Closeouts". The domain will stay here 6 days. Each day the price will drop by one USD. Today the domain is available to purchase for $10 plus reg fee which brings the total to $18 with coupon codes.
The link for Godaddy Closeouts is the same https://auctions.godaddy.com. However you need to click select "Closeouts" on the menu.
Day 37: The buy now price is now $9 plus reg fee
Day 38: The buy now price is now $8 plus reg fee
Day 39: The buy now price is now $7 plus reg fee
Day 40: The buy now price is now $6 plus reg fee
Day 41: The buy now price is now $5 plus reg fee. Total price is now $13 with coupon codes. Nobody bought the domain.
Day 45: The auto renewal by the registry has expired and there was no payment. Now the renewal is cancelled and the domain will continue dropping.
Day 85: Example.com enters pending delete. It shows in the snapnames and namejet pending delete search results with a date next to it. The date is 5 days later from today which is the dropping date, the auction start date and the last date to backorder. Backordering at snapnames costs $59 and at namejet $69.
Day 90: Example.com has now dropped and is now available to register.

Godaddy's website does not give any numbers on how many domains they have in the expiring section or in the closeouts section. They also limit search results to 40.000 domains. Therefore you can not calculate the total number of domains from number of pages. However domains from both categories are listed on NameCatch and there is also a stats page where you can see how many domains are coming from what category. You can also see the numbers by extensions.

For instance, right now there are 169.556 .com domains in Godaddy pre release and 26.744 .com domains in Godaddy Closeouts. These lists are updated daily. I don't get any commission from Godaddy for referring customers to them.

Happy domaining
Erdinc

If you don't buy the domain and it is an average quality domain, there is zero chance you will be able to hand register it because it will go through the pending delete auction before it drops which is watched by thousands of domainers. All the registrars in the World have exclusive traffic data from verisign that you don't have access to. I check pending delete lists all the time. I'm telling you, you have no chance if you let it go during closeouts. You only pay $5 extra compared to hand registering. This is a no brainer.

You will pay the regular registration fee (8 USD with coupon codes) on top of the closeout's price.

Check coupon codes here:

In the meantime i just bought a $9 domain on close outs at godaddy.
In addition to the $9 buy it now price there was a 1 year renewal fee attached - so those were the 2 costs in the transaction.
Does this now belong to me or can the original owner claim it back - ie is there a grace period before it 100% becomes mine.

You need to wait 6 days. You will receive another email.

This isn't too bad. Dynadot is making me wait 30 days. I can't sell (can't push) the domain during 30 day auction lock.
