In a move that is upsetting many clients, EV1 has signed a contract with SCO for linux:
SCO press release on Yahoo
(SCO) today announced an intellectual property licensing agreement with EV1Servers.Net, a dedicated hosting division of Houston-based Everyones Internet (EV1.Net). Under the terms of the agreement, SCO will provide EV1Servers.Net with a site license that allows the use of SCO IP in binary form on all Linux servers managed by EV1Servers.Net in each of its hosting facilities.

InternetNews coverage:
SCO spokesman Blake Stowell declined to give the exact value of the deal but said it was worth at least $1 million.

EV1servers.net is a $99-per-month Web site hosting company. Formerly known as RackShack.Net, the company has been in existence since 1999 and claims 400,000 customers in 42 states.

"They have 20,000 servers total," Stowell said. "The majority of those are Linux servers. This is a site license that covers those servers."

I'm presuming EV1 is doing this with its arm being twisted?

Wonder how this'll affect their pricing.

Actually I suspect it's a publicity deal for both of them and some kind of wierd thinking on EV1's part that it's future insurance. We don't even know if cash changed hands, it could even be a stock deal.

Well, once Rackshack's new datacenter, in Houston, is built... most of their prices will be cut by 30% - 40%... can't wait.. I went over to the construction site about 3 days ago.. and all is looking good... it's almost finished.. they are putting the racks in right now.. :).. so not too long until theres the price cut.. even though they are doign the deal with SCO

No they have stated there won't be a price cut.
Only a $1 setup fee special. I've even emailed the sales team the other day and they confirmed that. Do you have another source or are you just guessing?

I think though the availability of their new servers will cause other hosts to cut their prices. I am keeping my eye on ServerBeach, Interland and ServerMatrix.

Does this now make SCO in breach of the GNU GPL?

Crazy! There's more to this move than they're letting out.

what I wonder is why a company would change it's name from rackshack.net to the lame name of ev1servers.net? You'd think they could come up with a better name that that. I wonder it it's because someone else owned rackshack.com.

Probably that, but I'm guessing the "shack" in the name (plus being a dot-net) may have been getting to be a liability? I've once read about people being concerned about registering their domains at NameCheap before because they were concerned (to no apparent validity) that when clients check the whois and see "cheap" in the registrar, they'll get the wrong message about the registrant being a cheap bastard. Ditto for some people being concerned that the name rackshack only worsened an image of alrady cheap servers (even if RS is known for relatively good quality service).

Yes, I've seen a lot of advertising by RackSpace.com recently as well. Maybe they thought they were losing customers through confustion to them.

I still think they could have come up with a better name than they did though.

The company is really called "Everyone's Internet", not EV1.
Somewhere along the line, it got reduced to it's current form.

ACTUALLY, I do have sources. My cousin works for EV1 as one of their Head Technical Support Members, from what he told me, they are cutting prices as well as the 1$ setup fee. Sales team must have misinformed you or... well... lied to you.

And I agree, once the datacenter is finished, even if it is just a 1$ setup fee, most of the other hosts , I think ServerBeach, deffinately, will be cutting prices.

Yes, EV1 = Everyone's Internet. EV1 Acquired RackShack.com and it was later changed to Ev1Servers.net... The history, if aww didn't clearify it already =)

Well there is no price cut but a price increase instead. With all the other options around and their latest decision, they will have a slightly harder time in the dedicated market now.
