escrow.com is safe

SEDO escrow is another good option

be careful whether the offer is the appraisal scam

was it from a CEO/PhD or something ?

did it say anything like "we invest in domains , but not our main business , blah , blah" ?

what he does is ... he "accepts" any offer even at high $XX,XXX and say that he needs an appraisal ... then he "directs" you towards a company he owns or is affiliated with ... after you pay for the apppraisal (~$60) , he disappears

go to the warnings forum here on NamePros , there are many threads about it

Just in case it is a legit offer and not the appraisal scam, be aware that escrow.com does not take possession of the domain, you transfer it directly to the buyer. So technically it isn't fool proof, although I've never had any problems.

If you're looking for 100% safe, use Sedo or Moniker escrow. It'll take longer and be a little more pricey, but you get what you pay for.

I did not mention the possible problem with the buyer holding the domain (or transferring to a friend) and then declining the escrow in order to also get the money back for the following reason

the seller ... with the co-operation of his registrar , escrow.com and the receiving registrar (if there was transfer instead of a push) or registrars (if many transfers ensued) ... will manage to follow the trail of transfer(s) and logically retrieve the domain

(of course a push instead of a transfer could make this a lot easier , especially with the 60-day no-transfer rule)

many people that deal with domains know that domains (and their route) are traceable , so I don't think many people would risk depositing an $XX,XXX amount to try to pull that trick and get ridiculed ... of course with scammers you can't really know lol

mentioning it though was a good idea ... but in general escrow.com can be characterized as safe

(on a similar note , even SEDO can't be 100% safe :p , eg. if the funds used to make the payment were stolen money and were later on traced by the police (though this case is rather far-fetched lol))
