The internet domain registrar and web hosting company is making it easier to search for and register available emoji-based domains. On Friday, the company launched a search engine for emoji domains. People can visit the site on their phones, type in a string of emoji and see if the domain is available.
As more of the world increasingly uses the internet on phones and other mobile devices, a flood of emoji-based domains seems inevitable. Heck, even the Touch Bar on Apple's new MacBook Pro will let you type in emoji, something that's difficult to do with a traditional computer keyboard...

I can see emoji domains being really popular, just not the .ws extension, at least not so far.

But if some Disney-linked company is claiming trademark over every emoji where does that leave us?

I wouldn't think you could trademark letters of the alphabet and similarly emoji are characters.

I can't type these domains, so they are unfit for advertising. I can only click on them, and provided that the browsing device can render the special characters. Don't you need special fonts that may not be available on every platform ?
Even a QR code can be scanned if you have a tablet or smartphone. But Emojis ?
Reminds me of the guy who is struggling to sell £.com and yet this is a character found on many keyboard layouts, that is actually usable but vanity nonetheless.
Vanity can be quite profitable.

They don't get it. These are the same people comparing .mobi with the new G's.

This is a blog entry on http://blog.emojipedia.org/final-2017-emoji-list/

There are two possibilities for the next emoji list after this:

A new Emoji 6.0 release could be created and released between now and mid-2018. This would be able to include new flag sequences, or ZWJ sequences. Additionally, an emoji update can grant an existing Unicode character emoji presentation.

Alternatively, if the next emoji release requires new code points, the soonest that could be released is mid-2018 when Unicode 11.0 comes out.

It's premature to know which approach would be taken at this stage, and more may become clear after the release of Emoji 5.0 in June 2017.

------

CJ6: If I am understanding the bold part correctly, maybe they will be updating the older unicode characters to the newer style. I like that. It's a possibility, anyway.

Cool to see these getting picked up at the Sherpa show today. I've had some nice inquiries on a few of the singles I own, one of them even making a passive ~$80 monthly in parking and affiliate clicks. Considering even "selfie sticks" are a million dollar business, this doing reasonably well is not surprising in the least
