Let's say there's a domain that you want to purchase. You've tried to contact the registrant through email, but their email server is dead. Have you ever tried calling them and what was the outcome?

Phoned many times - sometimes the owner is very "perturbed" to have been bothered, other times they've been pleased to get something off their hands for some $ that they didn't even remember they owned.

Just be polite.

Usually don't call, most of them are not happy when you call. But if you do call, send him an email first, saying "I will be following up on Dec. 25 by calling you".

(Just in case there is some confusion, I believe Steve's "Don't do that" is in reference to calling on December 25th, rather than any judgment on calling in general.)
