Eliminate NP$ for Posts?

After getting so many short, meaningless, or unrelated posts to many of my threads (and seeing the same on others), what can we do to combat people who apparently post just to accumulate NP$? Any suggestions?

Should we eliminate NP$ for posts entirely in certain segments? Enable NP$ for posts only after a certain level of Rep has been established? Ideas?

Not all your NP$.. just the 1 or 2 for that post.. and it would require more than 1 person to flag it as a "bad" post before you lost the NP$, so that might eliminate problems unless you have alot of people who don't like you, lol.

I just thought of that. It seems like a good idea, but if someone does not like you or your views, so good bye to your hard earned NP$. :yell:

How about a system whereby, if users think someone is posting meaningless posts they can press a button similar to the report a post button however nothing would be reported. If the user recieves "x" amount of spam warnings, they go on an NP$ probabation period whereby they do not recieve NP$ for their posts for "x" number of days.

I like the idea a lot. Also, perhaps a system in place where your post has to be at least 25 characters long to be eligible for NP $ on that post?

I like this idea.. other than I think they should just lose the NP$ they acquired for that particular post... after losing a few NP$, I think they'd straighten up.

Just set it up so ppl have to post a decent length instead of LOL or sold etc this is easily done with VB and great for stopping stupid 1 or 2 word meaningless posts.

I'm beginning to think it has to be user-mandated rather than a script based on character length.. suppose I post a helpful link and someone wants to reply with a simple thanks.. should that be disallowed? No, but a script would have no way of nknowing that while a user clicking a "worthless" post link would.. see my point? A script can't discern context.

Well do you think that someone posting a simple "thanks" or "sold" or "pm sent" deserves to get the same amount of $NP compared to someone who has posted a few paragraphs?

I think a character count thing might work. I mean, I think it should allow those small posts to be posted, just dont award any $NP because I personally dont think a "thanks" or "pm sent" has contributed much to the forum.

Ill be honest, some of my posts are short, but I dont intentionally post them and think "Woohoo, 2 $NP and I didnt have to do anything!". $NP arent even on my mind when I post. I wouldnt mind if I wasnt awarded $NP for short posts.

(Like everyone else, I am not trying to be mean or offend anyone, just trying to get people to look at it from different perspectives)

If it's an honest, earnest answer or reply to the thread, yes.. how can you stretch a thanks or a congrats or get well soon to a couple paragraphs.. that's why I think the user mandated vote by pushing a button would work best.. an algorithm can't decide whether a post deserves NP$ or not IMO.

Most of the spammers are just 10 yr old kids who 'can't' afford a domain name and really want one..... hmmmm :\. I think the report spam thing would work (where x ammount of reports stops the person recieving np$ for a short period of time). Though stopping np$ all together.. no way :P. At least let people still buy some :P

I agree.. the NP$ system works for most and shouldn't be eliminated but there has to be a way to stop the spam.

I agree,Mods having to delete posts due to spam, and the second issue,The NP$ for spamming.I think admin will implement something soon to combat this.

I already posted this in another thread but I'll repeat it here -

When I see people who joined around July 2005 almost have 3000 posts, it really makes me wonder. I have looked through a couple of posts histories by members who joined around July of this year. I barely EVER found a post that was over 1 line, mostly 2 or 3 words. If you look in the "Congrats, I've reached x posts" it almost looks like people are trying to compete against eachother for the most amount of posts :( I highly doubt that all newbies here are after the NP's, it's also the lure of a HIGH postcount that gives them the feeling of beeing a "valuable" & "great" member.

Consider removing the post/NP$ increment in "the break room" and "NamePro's Information", "Namepros Contests" and "Website reviews" (meaning that posting in the breakroom will NOT add 1NP$ to the total NP balance of the user, nor add to the total post count.

That will stop the newbies from flooding the forum with nonsense and pointless posts.

Why don't they just make a minimum character limit for NP$ being recieved in a post. Say your post is less than 150 characters, NO NP$ FOR YOU! Wait, would I get NP$ for this post? Someone else can count.

Lots of spammers, as i said earlier, are just 10 yr old kids who can't -afford- a domain name. I must admit, that was me when i was a n00b (I can't say that i didn't USED to be one, though if you ask SV, I still im [even though im not :P]) over 6 months ago, though I have slowed down, becuase I can now afford to buy np$ to pay for the domain names that I do have.

I guess that would be another way to deal with the problem. Enforcing a 150 char limit in every post would reduce the spam, and people would have to put a little more effort into their posts.

Thank you. It might make a few less posts, but the website would still have just as much value with all of the meaningful posts.

One way of course is eliminating the NP$ for posting, but I do see a big problem with that. If that was done I don't think it would inflate the value, but just the opposite it would deflate the value very badly. Some people might disagree with me, but it's a known fact even the people that have never bought NP$, spend them. If there were less NP$ floating around it might inflate the value for a short period of time, but I think ultimately it will make them lose their value completely and all transactions will be through PayPal or a similar way of transferring money. I'm also sure there are people on here just for NP$ that actually do contribute (probably not too many but there are some).

My suggestion would be a warning from a mod or admin. After the first warning if the spamming continues, I'd wipe out all their NP$ (and donate them to me ). :o That's it, just a low tolerance for spamming. You spam you lose everything you earned. Just keep a list on the admin forum of who was warned, and if they get warned again delete their NP$ and make them start over. If they need a third warning, ban them for a week and wipe out their NP$ again.

Like others, I have oibserved the spamming and am disturbed by it. One thing I noticed is that a lot of the spammers come and go very quickly. They join, spend a few weeks here and then disappear.

Therein, methinks is one possible solution. To start accruing NP$, you have to have wait a minimum number of weeks or even months. It's kinda like some 401 k plans when you join a company. They make you wait a bit (to make sure you are staying with the company) before they match your contribution.

This is a good topic to get out in the open and discuss. Thanks dgridley for making it happen.
