Egypt and mobility

Just came back from Egypt ...


and will briefly sum up my experience with Egyptian people in sharm el sheikh:

Some Egyptian people dont:

* have computers at all, it is very rare to see a computer in egypt ... only companies have them (obviously there are always exceptions.)

* know much about computing in general

* like russians

* stop horning

* understand 'no'


Some Egyptian people (do) :

* know how to hassle you

* sell everything and anything

* sell you 'red pepper' ... well at least looks like it ... dont touch it cos the coloring may mess up your cloths.

* can be polite

* speak more languages then you could possibly imagine

* like to pimp their ride by changing their horn sound into anything ...

* have been everywhere worldwide, name your country and they claim to have been there ... just dont ask them what they have done ...

* love their mobile phones as everyone has got one ... going from old models to the latest newest ones ....

* advertise, however only mobile phone adverts all over the place ...


Overall, they are a mobile mad country as mobile phones are cheaper then computers and internet prices are relatively high. For a standard broadband connection you would be paying about £35 so $65 which doesnt even give you the best speed!

However, ask them about mobile internet and no one knows about it ...

so defenately a country like that would the mobile internet be very valuable as this could be there primary way of going on the net ...

Thats that from me on Egypt!

Happy to be back after all as I have been a good boy and have only spent 6 hours during my vacation on the internet and .mobi ....

And to treat myself I bought www.celcius.mobi and was hoping for some suggestions and comment about the name.

Great post. This is encouraging to hear because countries like these will be starting to access the internet more from their mobile devices over a pc. From what you say people in Egypt are already incredibly used to using their mobile phones, so now the next step would be for people to access the internet on them.

In many developed countries people first had phones that just called and accessed the net on their pcs. Then they brought the net over to your phone. It seems that in Egypt the skipped the whole pc and pc on the net thing and will be going straight from their mobile phones to the mobile net.


I really think in this case mobi is a great place to be marketed.

they dont like russians ... whenever i was talking to someone they were allways moaning about the russians ...

They do not like russian people. I don't agree with you when you are saying, that basic connection is 65 $..

It's about 5-20 $. And thats for a shared connection from net cafe. You didn't see egyptian life in home, you just visited in those tourist spots..

Dude, I am sorry, if I said it with a bit of negative way, I did not mean it.

I am half egyptian and I have been a loads of times in Egypt and I have few properties there etc. But anyway, usually internet connections and life are very different in tourist spots. I agree that egyptians are mobile freaks and they do like them very much. My cousin has asked from me a new telephone for a while as a present and they really LOVE telephones. They are playing with their rings on the street etc.

But internet connections are mostly very rare, especially in Cairo. There are NO internet connections there, but EVERYBODY YOUNG goes to internet cafes, you can go to internet from there with only 1-10 pounds from hour. So you could go to internet with even 0,2 $. Very cheap, isn't it? Egyptians like to be together in net cafes and play games there.

But I am sorry, I did not mean any harm for you.. Just liked to say it.

thanks for your explanation on the internet front ... i guess everything is more expensive in sharm then it is in cairo ... and not by a little bit

Well..that's becoming quite normal in europe also....
It's a shame that a group of very rich and very rude Russians give the average Russian a very ..very bad name..
In some hotels in Austria (wintersports) there's a "Russian quotum" and I know some dutch travel agents who promise a 'russian free' hotel...
