You will all probably be interested in reading this:

"Operators have denied rumours that they will meet in Barcelona to discuss designing their own rival to Google and Yahoo. However, dotMobi, the company that runs the .mobi internet address designed specifically for mobile phones, will announce today that it will launch a directory of all mobile internet content, which could be used as a basis for a search engine"

From FT.com

"A directory of all mobile internet content"

That's incredible.

Dot Mobi has a set of standards that only allow the user to design their mobile .mobi website using mobile compliant code. Otherwise if you're website isn't compliant the Mobi directory will eventually stop your site from resolving until you make it mobile compliant.

.com website designers could easily make their sites mobile compliant but 99.9998% of .com websites still can't be viewed on a mobile phone. It's easier for a user to just put in .mobi at the end of their address than .com. Because eventually all .mobi websites will be mobile compliant, most .coms will not be. It would be like hoping that when you put a .com in the url on a phone that the site resolves, while knowing fully that when you put a .mobi in, the site will be compliant. People go with what works. If the odds are in favor of .mobi sites working on phones over .com sites then people will prefer .mobi.

I see..

Very interesting article and thoughts..

One notable thing is that Dot Mobi business consortium yields so much strength, that they are able to hold key speaking engagements at these heralded business conferences..

First CES, now this one..

Unprecedented for new TLDs..

How high will Dot Mobi rise with such business network leverage..

Thanks for the info.

Kind Regards,

Yelo

So basically its not specifically designed , they just wont let it resolve if its not mobile compliant.

Either way if you want your site Cell Phone compliant you have to take the steps to do so , wether it be mobi or com.

Can you honestly say as a CEO you would say hey lets reg the Dot Mobi of our company name so we HAVE to follow the dot mobi rules ? I think not , if they want to be Cell Phone Compatible they will just take the very easy steps to make ther already Branded dot COM Cell Browser Compatible.

*sigh*

I think we need a 'general QnA' regarding the same old arguements regarding the purpose of .mobi so we are not saying/reading the same thing over and over again.

I doubt it would help anything. Enthusiasts post story after story regarding the emergence of mobi after less than 6 months and we get bashed because there isn't enough news. .Mobi sites are bashed because the URL resolves to a non-mobi URL. .Mobi sites are bashed because the same site could have been done with another tld. They are bashed for not complying, then are bashed for requiring compliance.

Yesterday it was a bunch of nonsense about not a single .mobi will be worth more than a $1. Now I'm being told that CEO's will never use .mobis because of the compliance issues. Whatever.

It's quite the macabre comedy :)

I've tried to ignore it for awhile, but it is getting pretty annoying. There's a difference between being a skeptic and being an a**hole.

He said he's a "mobi noob" so probably hasn't read any of the other threads on the matter.

And thanks for sharing thinking1. :)

Hi, look at these sites! I found lots of useful things for me, and maybe you'll find something too? But I'll be glad if you'll find something useful for you like I did.

Oh don't waste your effort. Just do a search for my username in the mobi forums and pick a thread to see an angry mob protecting their mobi vision. It's ugly, it will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it might stop you from being the center of ridicule as well.

Enjo.

Actually, that would be a fun search. I'm guessing the thread would start out as a good .mobi discussion then you would chime in with an inflamitory post and the thread would quickly degrade.

Nothing against you personally, or your seemingly bipolar position to .mobi. That is just my observation.

Could be, but I think he just likes to stir the pot a bit. I guess that is why he quickly adopted "the spoon" when it was suggested.

"the spoon's" first post in this thread is decidedly inflammatory, which imho is another attempt to stir the pot. I don't mind that so much but it does get tiresome at times.

Having said all that, lets get this thread back on topic :)

We can talk about that in PM, I don't think it belongs in this thread. :)
