Ebay just announced they are breaking up the merger with Paypal. Paypal will revert to its erstwhile status before being bought by Ebay.
The gains expected by incorporating Paypal into Ebay has been at best negligible. On the other hand Paypal seems to be doing well on its own as the highest percentage of its business is derived from outside Ebay.
I think the move is a good strategy. Freeing Paypal would make it a leaner and more agile company. Qualities that would help a lot in staying in business given the competition in the epayment ecosystem. Especially from the likes of Apple, Amazon and Google. You just never know what these guys would come up with.
