Over the weekend I had made an offer on Sedo for a name listed as "make an offer" The listing price was $500, I matched that amount. Then I get a response $10,000 to buy the name ? To me this is just a stupid waste of time, I have no problem that you may want $10,000 for a name. Although there is not much point listing a name for $500 offers if you have no intention of selling around that amount. I find that nearly every time I see a name I like with a "make an offer" amount it is just a waste of time. I normally keep looking. I am well aware this is a tactic to have more offers next to the listing, but makes me think ....

I think you overread something. The post you replied on states:
"you lose a sale over 1k", meaning: by putting a min bid and bin of 10k, someone who is willing to pay 9k won't send you an offer. You lost a potential sale there and the reason is you wanted 1k more, even though you might have accepted the 9k.[/QUOTE

That's how I read too. However, if I was within 1k I would certainly contact the buyer !

The reason for this is very mean and I tracked it, the scenario is as follows :
He puts the name as you mentioned here, then het gets 10+ offers in a couple of months, then increases the minimum offer to 10K! Then someone naive would think he got 10 offers above 10K already so this boosts their confidence to place a 10K offer, then the seller sells the name... absolutely mean but it works... unfortunately!
