So from skimming the terms and conditions of multiple dropcatching services, most will state that a caught domain comes with a year of registration and all prices are final as shown on the pricing tables - auction fees excluded. For example, Pheenix.com mentions an $11,99 charge for .xyz domains. Since .xyz has a well compiled list of all their premiums, I was able to deduce that "love.xyz" comes at a steep $1300 yearly renewal. Pheenix however, still offers said domain to me for an $11,99 dropcatch charge. No mention of premium prices or surcharges anywhere.

What happens when a dropcatching service succesfully catches a keyword that the registry decides (perhaps retroactively) is a premium renewal name? Will they charge me extra? Will the domain not go through a regular expiration process due to it's exclusive premium status? Potential for catching great names aside, I do NOT want to run into unexpected 10k+ renewal fees for an expired domain when it's this hard to get a hold of clearly defined premium lists for certain ngtld's.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I guess you will know it only when the renewal date comes. Then, if you face the premium rate, you have a nice choice of to pay it or to drop the name. But you still can enjoy a year of owning the name ))

If the actual registration cost is $1300 / year, then pheenix will most likely not try to catch it. Sure you can add it to your list but it will not get caught.

Registry make it premium, by the time it is dropped.

Pheenix dont catch a premium domain.

Dont worry.

this is a real problem since renewal prices could change at any time. a regfee could be $120k next year.

if a dropcatcher accepts backorders in advance for a nominal fee of $69 how would they handle this situation.
either they make the buyer pay-Would ruin the company's reputation soon - or they pay it themselves.

another option would be to allow the registrar to return the domain to the registry at no cost.

not sure if that is possible.

it does not matter what happens, in every case the domainer would be out of luck.

IMO dropcatching in the new Gs will for the most part not be sustainable, more and more terms will be premium and what will be left will be breadcrumbs.

The registrar trying to catch a domain will check the pricing to make sure it matches what it expects. If it doesn't then the domain won't be caught.

Hexo deals with catching premium gtlds fine.

I saw them being picked up the moment they were released - absolute killer names if the owner develops them into something worthwhile, but that premium renewal rate is still going to sting a few years down the line. It's an interesting business model for the registry if these things fly off the shelf in the same way the above two just did, that much is certain.

I hope they have development plans....

Otherwise they bought themselves a nice collector piece with a $1,200 a year property tax fee.
