Hi I just got a message from the domain register that a drop auction I won for a .com, was cancelled because the original registrant had renewed the domain (using the same registrar service) . Does this make sense...? is this logical given that the domain has theoretically been deleted/released and caught by the registrar..? .

The owner of the domain either paid the fee to redeem it with the registrar or managed to transfer it out.

Was likely a pre-release and not a drop auction. You should read the Terms of the auction you are in as they outline this quite (un)clearly in most cases. Namejet and Godaddy are up front about the potential for a name to be renewed.

This was a drop it was not pre-release, I have sent a message requesting some further info on the transaction. Has this happened to anyone else ...? Can I do anything, do I have any rights here ?

Apart from the ones they keep for themselves Dynadot's system allows for the original registrant to renew names for up to 3-4 days after auctions have finished.

Well this was through dynadot, that may explain it. But if this case, then why go through the drop, auction process if there is a risk the original registrant will decide to renew...this does not make any sense.

Original registrar managed to re-reg the name? Did you tell them that the domain was a PENDING-DELETE one?

All the expired auctions at Dynadot are what other places term "pre-release".

Dynadot is very clear how it works no clue why you are acting surprised and shocked.

Your best bet is hit up the owner and try to buy it.

If whois shows a creation date in August 2014 for this domain then I don't see why would Dynadot award the name to the previous registrant. Maybe he confused someone at DD, telling it was a pre-release while it was not?

wait it was in pending delete and it dropped and u had it backordered with dyna? was it reged to dyna prior to the drop?

You are making some pretty serious accusations here

Not making any accusations, just stating what happened. Won a pending delete backorder auction and then it was cancelled for the reasons stated above.

What is the creation date?

Hi,

It was an expired auction/pre-release where the original registrant renewed the domain. The creation date is 2011. Our expired auction bid page and drop catch private auction pages look very similar, so I can see where there can be some confusion.

@wot - We don't keep any domains for ourselves. We have no domain portfolio of our own.

@Brandchovy (love the name) - It seems you were confused about the type of auction you were bidding in.

FYI..just in case you were not aware (like me)

"...Our Expired Auction domains list are only domains listed here at Dynadot, which have expired. We put the domains into the auction 30 days after they expire. The owner, however, has a full 40 days to grace renew. If the owner does not renew within their grace period, the domain is moved to the new winner's account. If the owner does renew, the order is cancelled and refunded...."
