I got tired of the free hosts vanishing after a month or so, so now I finally decided to get a paid hosting, I heard a lot about hostgator and about dreamhost, but I want to know, which one is better? performance wise and price wise?
I'll also appreciate if you could post any pros and cons for each for them.

IMO, they're both good choices. I haven't used Dreamhost but I've heard very good things about them firsthand from people who have.

Hostgator - I've had several sites on there for a couple of years now and have only good things to say about them. Very reliable and trouble-free. One thing to watch out for: if you're running a mailing list they have strict rules regarding the # of messages you can send within a certain period of time. This is a good thing, as it makes their hosts unattractive to spammers, but if you have a large legit mailing list you'll probably have to reconfigure and throttle the output to avoid running afoul of their TOS and losing your account. You may want to use an outside service instead of running your own list(s).

Well, i can't give a fair opinion, as i'v never used DreamHost.

Though, my brother has being using HostGator for quite a while now.
When i'v needed to use the support, i found they were very good.

The server seems great, the cPanel and WHM works fine.
I use his reseller daily (No charges for me :p), and i can't fault it at all. :tu:

I've used HostGator, and wouldn't recommend it. Their servers are easy to hack. I got a few bad experiences with them.

DreamHost, I used for a little bit, and was very impressed. I'd highly recommend them over HostGator.

Both companies are reputable but much depends on your budget and other requirements.

I just tried to get a hosting from DreamHost, but there is no option to pay by paypal? Is there any other hosting with about the same plans(can be less though) as DreamHost, and about the same price(around 30$ for one year) that accepts paypal?

i have dreamhost and i really like it. Reason? I can create a seperate user account and then run the new websites with that particular username and instead of just pointing to a subdir on your main account it creates for you another directory on the server.
Right now i am running 4 websites with them with 4 different usernames/passwords and if one gets compromised then i dont have to worry for all 4 websites.
I have never had a hostgator , and can not comment on that one/.

I Like dreamhost, yes they have their downtime, as do many other host's, their customer support is great, nice and cheap, plenty of room, they're not perfect, but who is for $10 a month?
Best of all you get access to pretty much everything on the server, except for root, through ssh, so you can setup cron job's, install your own software, and loads of other great stuff!

I like dreamhost because they've been in the hosting industry for a long time and has very attractive diskspace and bandwidth offer, and you can even use coupons to get discounted hosting price.

    I've used both for a couple years...HostGator, HANDS-DOWN!

I love HostGator. Dreamhost is great for small sites, but I would never recommend them for business hosting. I posted a more detailed explaination here

I just got a HostGator account...

Kinda hard to pass on 100gb Space and 1,000gb Transfer for less then $10 per month.

I have never seen this much offered here or anywhere at this price, figured it was worth giving them a go.

I'm in the process of transfering my 8gb site now...

Add another reason why I like dreamhost is because I can install custom software using ssh. Because I need to access ftp using cron. You can't call ftp command to login to another server using cron. That's why I need to install wput and it just work :D.
I don't know if hostgator can do this too.
hello anyone, if you use hostgator can you inform me about this?

I've looked at almost all of the hosting companies out there,...
So, i really hate to drag this topic off to the side, i've been looking around like a madman to find decent hosting, checked out everyone and ended up at: Servage

360GB diskspace/3.6 Terra bandwith for $6.45/mth. (paypal accepted)

We've had quite some problems with a conversion, their tech support was very responsive, we've tinkered around for quite some time just to figure out that we've done something wrong in the end.

I'm by far not saying that they're the best, but maybe they're worth being taken in consideration. (and if you decide to go with them, PM me, i can send you a coupon for 25GB more diskspace)

    just my .2€
