Dragons neglect domain names

July 24, 2008

Contestants on TV's Dragon's Den may face a tough grilling from Duncan Bannatyne et al, but there's one important question that has never been asked on the programme.

Domain name company Sedo has claimed that while the the Dragons focus on issues such as financials and product patents, they don't ever think about domain names.

"I have never once heard the judges asked a contestant whether they have registered the best internet domain names to promote or sell their products," said Nora Nanayakkara, director of business development at Sedo.

"In 2008 it's a shame that the public face of the UK entrepreneur movement doesn't seem to realise that how an organisation presents itself on the web can make or break a business – and the right domain name is a big part of that," Nanayakkara continued.

Nice, thanks for sharing. I totally agree, A decent, easy to remember domain name is crucial for the success of a business. If they don't have that, then they may find themselves spending big to acquire a decent name.

It might be worth going on Dragons' Den and asking them for 200k to invest in domain names. A keyed-up domainer could probably double that investment on a time scale ranging from six months, to two or three years.

Its not just the domains, this is one of their websites.

We are currently updating iteddy.com. The shop has been temporarily disabled and you won't be able to purchase any content whilst we make these changes.

...........

I'v seen a couple other examples of dragons den product domains with no content on them either, it is strange that bright people like that don't seem to put internet sales very high on their list of priorities.

On Peter Jones website he has the url reggaereggaesauce.co.uk which is pointed to his own website ;), if you type it in it is parked although they seem to be using www.reggae-reggae.co.uk for the product.

Its a great show though :tu:
