We'll it seems GoDaddy has stopped offering the gTLD dot name for registration and this may signal the gTLD's demise for good.

Rest of the news can be read here

**I apologize that I had to link to one of my sites, however I could not find the news on any other industry blogs to link to, let me know if its an issue**

For something to die it has to be alive first, when was .name alive?

If an extension is longer then 3 letters then it fails. Its that simple. Dont know why most people dont seem to notice.

Correlation does not imply causation.

For branding purposes and for mindshare, semantic meaning is a far bigger factor.

Hopefully the ridding of .name will make more room for .web which is only destined for success.

Depends on your definition of success...

.web will be the new.net, at least I hope. .name was a bad idea to begin with, at least .web looks and sounds good.

The fact that they are so long makes them less brandable.

lol .pro died once already, someone gave mouth to mouth unfortunately. it's got a pacemaker :sold:

You should look into .pro. Registrations tripled in September and that trend looks to have continued into October. I got an offer for $3,000 for a .pro yesterday from a Czech company and turned it down.

A couple of weeks ago, I got an enquiry about Train.pro from a French guy. On 8 September Trains.pro and SNCF.pro was registered by SNCF in France. They have 180,000 employees, 32,000 km of track, and operate 14,000 trains daily. Maybe with .pro you could sell a domain for more than $50?:)

the extension .name never was too popular..it doesn't surprise me that the extension has fallen backing in registration numbers.

Godaddy was pushing .name to all their customers not too long ago.
That was before Godaddy started providing registry services for the .me ccTLD.

If the .NAME registry fails it will be a warning to those looking to start one of the new extensions that ICANN is trying to bring out. NAME is not a bad choice for an extension, probably better than most that could be proposed.
Don't write it off just yet. :)

Godaddy says they aren't offering any new
.name registrations at this time, but existing
domains can still be renewed...

If all the major registrars stop reg'ing .names, maybe the value of the existing premium reg's (dictionary-word, LLL, etc) would skyrocket?

I have only one that I'd hate to give up... Got.name

I doubt it, in the supply&demand equation that might limit supply a bit but there never has been much demand for this extension.

So because Godaddy is no longer selling a certain extension - It's dead ?

I'd see that as a good thing for any extension - Not being offered on Godaddy that is :red: - Sorry , Never been a fan of SlowDaddy ...

It's never been a strong Extension to begin with, But since March of this year , Google has added over 2 million more to their Crawling list (Everyone may get different results according to where they are and what settings they use on Google). Compared to some other extensions ... I wouldn't count it as "Dead" Even un-officially. Mind you , I'm also not endorsing it as the investment of the year either

The search engines seem to have reached a limit and the site: command numbers don't seem to be growing as much as they used to. Perhaps its the economic climate or maybe they have found everything
