We'll it seems GoDaddy has stopped offering the gTLD dot name for registration and this may signal the gTLD's demise for good.

Rest of the news can be read here

**I apologize that I had to link to one of my sites, however I could not find the news on any other industry blogs to link to, let me know if its an issue**

Godaddy was pushing .name to all their customers not too long ago.

If the .NAME registry fails it will be a warning to those looking to start one of the new extensions that ICANN is trying to bring out. NAME is not a bad choice for an extension, probably better than most that could be proposed.

I would be very interested to see what happens if they do fold. Will existing domains just vanish? Will they complete their term and not be able to be renewed? Will another registry keep the current names alive, possibly giving them collector value?

The most important part of owning a domain name is future rights - the time and money spent building and promoting a website and the hope for future price appreciation both are completely dependent on continuing ownership of the domain. If a registry closes shop and refuses to renew existing names it destroys the fabric of trust the domain name system is built on.

.name has always been a third class domain name. I cant think of any legitimate site that uses this TLD and frankly, it doenst even sound right. Imagine telling someone to visit your website

DomainName.name

I would completely expect a double-take

I'm glad that .Lame, I mean .Name is on its deathbed :hehe:

The only .name I registered was Saturday.name, then I came to my senses and deleted it for credit a couple days later (thanks Dynadot!)

Absolutely - and .name didn't have anything like the competition that each of these new extensions will face if there are suddenly 2,000 new registries touting for business

I don't think the TLD is dead. This release was carried on various sites earlier in October 2008.

We are pleased to announce that VeriSign closed on an agreement to acquire Global Name Registry, Ltd., which includes management of the .name top level domain on October 1, 2008. We believe the addition of .name is a natural fit, as we have run the technical backend in support of .name for more than five years.

What does this mean for existing registrars?

Your interface to VeriSign for .name domain names will continue to operate as it has in the past with no changes.

We are currently assessing enhancements to the service offering that meet the needs of the registrar channel in servicing the consumer market. Please look for service notices in the coming weeks that will outline those changes and the steps you need to take advantage of those features.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Customer Service at [E-MAIL].

Very truly yours,

PJ Bolanos
Vice President, Global Customer Support

Someone with alpha-numerical domain hacks in their signatures shouldn't talk like that. :imho:

Yeah, I've noticed that they didn't allow me to transfer my dot names. There were any options there. :'(

For something to die it has to be alive first, when was .name alive?

If an extension is longer then 3 letters then it fails. Its that simple. Dont know why most people dont seem to notice.

Although I wasn't a fan of .name I hope it stays around.
