According to Arabianbusiness.com:

Dubai eGovernment said on Sunday it has successfully obtained the domain name .Dubai as it continues to build the emirate's online brand.

The US-based Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved the adoption of the top level domain name, it said in a statement.

It said the move was part of the "ongoing endeavour to promote Dubai through the creation of an online brand identity to reinforce Dubai's position as a leading global hub for business, knowledge-based economy and socio-culture".

I think they mean it was applied for and they probably anticipate winning, but they did not get approval yet.

BTW those of you who followed my 'Beyond Dubai: Reem Island Abu Dhabi--Don't Miss Out!' thread should note that Reem Island is undergoing huge amounts of development and is a BOOMING SUCCESS. Just about everything I said in that thread back in 2007 has come to pass.

That's just it and more than likely anything relevant or worth registering will be gone almost immediately.

Those familiar with Dubai, the UAE, and the tourism could benefit from this.

Thanks Giles and yes I remember you. Both those domains you list should do great and you should consider developing them yourself rather than selling them since the amount of development taking place on Reem Island is truly amazing, just as I said it would be back in 2007 when Reem Island was nothing but sand.

I believe the worst is over for Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the rest of the UAE as well as Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Kuwait. I think we are at the start of a new 5-10 year upward cycle in the region. In fact I recently wrote a post in my UAE Mega Projects blog entitled 'Dubai Is Coming Back.' You should read it and I think you and the other domainers would get some great domain ideas from the blog:

Qatar is a good investment. Best of luck with your domains. The only real problem is the lack of Qatari population just like dubai. Most are expatriates so they are use to .com / ccttld where they are from
