1and1 is obviously going to try and renew all of those free names you got through them. I have a feeling Hostway is going to do the same. Well if you want to ensure you don't wake up one morning with a broke bank account here's what you should do.

Get a prepaid mastercard or visa. You can find them all over online. Western Union even has them. Depending on where you get one it might be free or $10 to $25 dollars for the card and you will have to load $10 to $25 on it. Make sure you have atleast $6 on the card. I just noticed 1and1 verifies the card with a $6 transaction which is automatically refunded.

Mosey on over to 1and1 and change your billing information over to that of the cash broke card. Cut up the card and be done. Most places the card will automatically cancel after 90 days with no funds on it. 1and1 and the others wont be able to get money from a card which has none. :notme:

You are changing your information to valid information. Just not one with money there to be taken from a company who is renewing names which people have asked to be deleted.

Better than being out a few hundred. Actually you really don't have to cut up the card just make sure you don't have any funds on it until after those names have been deleted. :wave:

They're not "illegally" renewing names.. however, they don't give you any way to turn off "auto renew" in the domain control panel.. you either have to transfer the domains out of 1and1 or cancel the domain before renewal by going to cancel.1and1.com and then faxing the signed cancellation forms to them. (However, this is no guarantee as I sent them the cancellation forms and they are still trying to bill me).

Legality for the law to decide. But at the very least, what 1and1 is doing is
"unethical" and detrimental to their users.

Are you sure about this? I have 3 domain names with them and reallly really hate them. I spent hours on the phone with them and faxed in all the approppriate forums as requested and they have not canceled them yet either.
I tried transferreing them over to Godaddy and they now show up on my Godaddy portfolio as if the transsfer wored but they also still show up in my 1and1 domains. They have been like this for about 6 months now. I am getting close to trying the fake credit card option but i dont want them to report me to a collection agency
