I know it's nice for domain name owners to spend countless hours promoting your own domain names you have for sale. Nothing is wrong with this....

Something else that I see nothing wrong with, is promoting the Domain Industry as a whole as well.

I spend countless hours a week promoting the domain industry, the value of domain names and why people should own certain domains.

I know this will not directly effect me today or tomorrow but the simple fact is, so many people do not know about domain names. The values in them, or that they "could" purchase a domain that is owned by somebody.

Domain owners need to start being less selfish and we need to Band Together and help promote the domain industry itself.

I ask that at least Once Per Day you help promote the domain industry as a whole.

You can do this by:

~ Using Twitter.com and write helpful things about domain names.
~ Inform somebody about Whois.sc, so they can contact a domain owner of a domain they simply think now of as "taken".
~ Use Facebook.com and let people know about Domaining.com, Sedo.com etc.
~ Use MySpace.com and teach somebody about domain forwarding.
~ Tell your neighbor about a recent domain name sale.
~ Tell people about DnJournal.com.
~ Use your blog, or a friends blog and write something helpful about domains.
~ Just tell somebody something about domain names.

This doesn't have to take an hour. It can take a minute or less really!

Being helpful always works the best. If you can teach somebody a little something, it's more likely they will listen.

With the domain community joining together to get the word out about domain names and helping educate the general public, in return will increase End User sales and the awareness of domain name. Yes, the very same domains that You Own!

For those who already do this, I Thank You! Keep up the great work!

Just once a day, help promote the Domain Industry as a whole. ALL domain owners will benefit in the long run!

Agreed.

And part of this starts at "home," in places like Namepros and other domaining forums.

This includes being kind to newbies who come here with their hopes and dreams, which we may have to dash. Sometimes their questions might seem like domaining 101, but we need to remember that we were all new at one time.

I, for one, will do my best to be supportive of newbies, while still being honest with them.

Im all for this and i actually have been trying to do this for a while now. The problem i have is that most people laugh at you no matter how much proof you have of how much domain names can make. Not to mention the countless people calling you a cybersquater when you tell them you buy and sell domain names. Its like telling people you own an ebay business and them calling you a scammer.

Educate them Ross. Their is a clear difference between a cybersquatter and a domain investor. Maybe this posting will help you explain http://www.dotweekly.com/2009/02/09/uneducated-domain-buyers-are-cry-babies-squatter-callers/

Domain names are the face of the internet and your online business.

Let the uneducated laugh, while you laugh at them for not learning.

I actually do it when sending out email to end users.

I tell them, my domain name has got some traffic, and you can use it to re-direct the hits to your main site, then you get more customers and etc.....

Good post, Yofie,

I often talk about domains & domaining with friends, and its sobering just how few people have ANY idea what a domain is, really....I mean, they know the internet has something DOT something, but they have no sense of a domain as a core thing, or, as a commodity, or, as an entity that has a value......Let alone the idea of buying & selling them, or developing a real business with them etc...

There's still a huge disconnect between what they see on a computer screen, everytime they visit a site - and, understanding the role a domain plays in getting them there...!

I agree....pass the word - any way we can....Can only build the market.

Great post.

I find myself doing this constantly, almost by reflex.

It's always good to promote your industry as well as your products.

You are absolutely right Jamie!! But when i talk to my friends about domaining, they are like listening to a fantasy story D-:

These type of "media" stories don't help the general perception, it's got just enough of fact to be damning & just enough slanted fiction to sway the general public
