What is your opinion about domains with "r" instead of "er"?

For example:

flickr.com
tumblr.com
screensnapr.com

There are always better domains to reg. Not everyone can make a successful site like Flickr.

These type of domains are growing in popularity. Personally, I like them and might invest in a few.

Very Web 2.0, though I mentally pronounce them with a short "er" sound rather than a normal "er", which obviously isn't what the creators intend.

I think they can work well, if the site is developed properly, but if not can work against it (as in, "that site both looks rubbish and has a silly name" vs "that site looks cool and has a quirky name")

I personally wouldn't even waste my time with them if they weren't world famous like flickr...it is one thing to have an edgy name and it is quite another to have an edgy name that everyone recommends.

You may be able to get away with it if you are trying to get a budget domain name but it could backfire in your face oh so easily as your "web darling" could have no one willing to take it on. No one likes swimming to a sinking ship.

Good luck.

Good point!

Great point Sparhawke. That's why it's essential to either develop a minisite or logo to go along with your Web 2.0 brandable domain.

This will allow the end user to get an idea of its usability & brand personality. At least that's what I do.

Thanks,

Good for Developers or TM seekers. I would imagine useless otherwise.

IBM released Quickr. Just to add to your list.

This thread has come back to life....

I've seen many new sites/domains that end with "r" instead of "er". For example, this morning in the sf cornicle there is a business article about an app called efemr (efemr(dot)com).

Has anyone else notice this trend growing?

I have Jennifr in the dot com. I can't say that it has benefited me in any significant way. I wouldn't build a brand on such a name UNLESS I had the correct spelling (and that isn't gonna happen).

Don't know about a trend, but a few weeks ago I reg'd CybrSea.com.

I actually like that. Too bad my name doesn't end in "er" :) I wouldn't build a brand on it (but someone might), but I would use it as my personal website, if my name was Jennifer. Use it for email also. [email protected] has a nice ring to it :)

If you had a good misspell or one that you thought was good, what would you ask for it?

It wouldn't be much because it's not worth much, it's only worth what you make of it, A lot of hard work and money went into the domains you listed, that's what adds value and NOT the name itself.

Can't agree more, it's not about er or r but about website content, function, feature, creativity, promotion and sure financial support...

I like them, but only when you want to differentiate yourself from the standard spelling.

For example, if you sell refrigerators, don't call yourself refrigeratr.com

I have only one, and I have priced it quite high - lifesavr.com

own: trimmr.com

sold:
snookr.com
shortenr.com

:)

Always a fan of them!

I like them! they are cool. But may lead to drive away traffic to the 'er' domain if not rightly and widely marketed!
