Domainmonster: Free Privacy?

I just saw this on Domainmonster's site:

Compare Domain Name Privacy Service with public Whois

Anyone use this free service?

If so, is there a catch, such as having to pay for it in the future?

I think it would be GREAT if all registrars incorporated a free privacy option, as long as you could easily disable it when you needed to sell a domain.

A lot of domain thefts could be avoided (though it might open the door to other kinds of theft, via phishing and thieves hiding behind privacy).

One catch is you'll almost certainly miss out on some enduser domains if your domains are good enough you're worried about losing them.

Another is that for most people, having more security means they'll take more risks. Reality is it'd be pretty easy to hack most domainers -- we're all a way too trusting bunch. Just takes one click on a bad link, one download of a bad file, a vulnerability in your email host, someone sniffing your wifi, etc.

The best way to protect your domains is to frequently login to your domain name accounts and make sure everything is still there and nothing has been changed. Privacy is a false sense of security -- not really anything more than that.

Thanks, all.

Good point, Reece. Privacy can afford a false sense of security; we, ourselves, are often the weakest link in security.

Domainmonster seems to be more expensive than other registrars, so maybe privacy isn't really free after all.

:)

Domainmonster registered my domain swimwire.com for my personal site, and I chose free privacy - no catch whatsoever. It really is free.

Privacy protection is to safeguard your personal information from spammers, data harvesters, etc... its no way meant to protect or secure your domain

Thats not true.
see the strange email address on the private whois?
send an email there, and voila... It gets forwarded to the domain owner.
No lost sales there.
I have received many such emails on my private whois domains.
