I made my first domain transfer.

Question

Am I under a 60 day lock before I can list the domain for sale?

I contacted Porkbun support they weren't 100% positive. They said maybe I should wait just to prevent any delays if the domain sold.

I looked at ICAAN.

There are some circumstances under which a registrar must deny a transfer request, and some circumstances where the registrar has the option to deny a transfer.

Your registrar may deny a transfer request in the following limited circumstances:

Evidence of fraud
Reasonable dispute over the identity of the person authorizing the transfer
Domain name is on hold due to payment owed for a previous registration period (including credit card charge-backs)
Express written objection from the domain name holder
Domain name is in "Lock" status (Registrars must provide a readily accessible and reasonable means for name holders to remove the lock status. Contact your registrar for assistance.)
Domain name is within 60 days of initial registration
Domain name is within 60 days of a previous transfer <----- Does this apply to me?

If there is a crystal clear answer, I don't know it.

It depends on both the registrar and the TLD/registry/backend. For example, as far as I know with .org and .xyz (and some others) the backend/registry do the lock after transfer. Note this also applies to the entire .xyz family of names, like .homes, etc. I had an .xyz sale that was in lock after transfer, and nothing could be done to expedite it. Fortunately, after some delay, the buyer agreed to take it at the same registrar so the sale did happen. For many other TLDs, it is at the registrar discretion, and some add the lock and some do not.

I have had .com names pushed to me and then I immediately transferred them to another registrar from several different registrars, but some registrars make you wait as new owner. I think the Identity Digital new extensions are also not similarly locked by registry, so if your registrar allows, you can transfer.

I used to always wait to list, but that is a lot of lost time, so I no longer wait. If a name does sell, then many marketplaces will see if the buyer will take a push, which is still allowed at that registrar. In other cases they wait, And yes, I am sure, some get impatient and sale falls through.

If I am wrong on any of above, which is totally possible, could someone please correct me.

Transfer, as in the domain was moved from one registrar to another or it was moved to you but at the same registrar?

Most major registries are going to lock domains when they change registrars.

With some you can see the lock in the WHOIS. It will show something like "servertransferprohibited".

I was surprised Porkbun didn't give me a definitive answer. I also think 60 days is an extended period of time to wait.

The ICAAN rules seem to pertain to fraud. It's not specifically saying if you transfer from A to B you can't list it at C.

The 60 day lock after a transfer between registrars is pretty standard.

No from SEDO to Porkbun. Do I have to wait 60 days to list on Afternic or Sedo?

Ok
Porkbun was vague. They said maybe I should wait.

This is highly confusing. Are you talking about registrar transfer, or changing marketplace landers/listings?

I just looked at WHOIS (GoDaddy)

SEDO is a registrar?

What extension is it? More than likely it has a 60 day lock.

They certainly are not.
Well, Sedo.com LLC is an ICANN accredited registrar with IANA ID 1372, but it's not used for customers afaik.

I bought it from Sedo.

.NET

I didn't use WHOIS to initially look it up. It was between Domainindex and another website that said I may have potential issues.

Renewals might be premium. 2026 it comes up for renewal. Right now Porkbun says $12.

The trademark office shows 3 companies formed after the domain was first registered. Only one company has a LIVE Wordmark filed 2024. The other 2 it says DEAD.

I halfway looked at the wayback machine. I'll look at every page change when I get a chance.

@Inframan Please look for the "IANA ID" - but I guess it's Porkbun as you said.

The only confusing thing still is that you bought if "from" Sedo.

When you remove the Lock for this domain in the Porkbun dashboard, does the Domain Status change?

I did a search for .NET on Sedo in my price range. I bought it after looking at 12 different websites. That's how I found out about the potential trademark and renewal costs. Since the domain was registered before any of the companies were formed, I didn't see it as a trademark infringement. I just need to completely look at the wayback machine to see the history.

I don't know where the name was registered before it was transferred to Porkbun but it isn't important.

You don't have to wait 60 days to sell it. If it does sell the buyer would just need an account at Porkbun. You could then push the domain to their account at any time.
