Hello Raider,

Responding to your post:

I think that auctions are by nature targeted to domainers.

Let say I am looking for a classy name for a new service, as you may imagine I am not going to wait and see if I find that name in a domain auction. I need the domain now and there are big chances the names I want don't be present in the auction.
Now let say I am a company that have been doing well and decided to buy this terrific generic name that best describe my service/product.
Again, there is low chance this name be present in an auction.
For the end user the place for buy is generally domain markeplaces with a very huge inventory or a domain broker that will locate and negotiate the name to buy.
Domain auctions are really for investors (domainers).
Now there is a difference between domainers and resellers.
All the domainers are not resellers. Now all the resellers are domainers.

I think that was true in the past with afternic and sedo. I do think the moniker and domainools auctions have been seeing some re-targeting to not necessarily business, but domain developers. I think some of these are former domainers who made money and have found they can actually make more by using that money to buy and develop a name into a business than just trading names and finding end users and clicks. Obviously the names recently sold on these auctions at higher prices are not purchased for PPC income. Yes, some are flipped again, but names like those purchased for 5, 6, and 7 figures would be risky to flip at that price, but good bets for developed businesses.

The auction may be over, but some of the buyers are not done. Today I recieved an offer for Copies, com, above my asking reserve. Entering 6 digit territory. Not a done deal yet, but this guy seems very motivated as an end-user. He even contacted Jay, who in turn called me.

I'm positive the same will happen to some of you.

"BTW--about the 90 day exclusivity by Moniker, yesterday in a chat session I was told that there is also a clause in the agreement that says you must contact Moniker 10 days prior to the 90 days ending and tell them not to renew the exclusivity, or it will automatically. Don't know if this is accurate."

Just to repeat, again, how about a sticky for the rules of the various auctions and "clauses" to watch out for :?

Some info about the payment of names purchased?
As a buyer I did not receive any mail nor see anything talking about the next step.
I want to pay by bank wire and don't want DomainTools take 15K from my PayPal account.

...

Mark, I call a domainer someone that makes money with domains: parking, selling, or developping. These auctions are targeted to domainers in the way the number of domains sold is insignificant. If I am planning a site about X then only a vendor or marketplace offering hundred thousands names may have 1 or names about X to propose me.

I was going to ask the same thing cybertronic - wondering what i needed to do on my end to expedite the transfer of the domain names to the seller.
maybe they'll send out an email today.

I made a purchase as well as a sale, and haven't been contacted about either one yet. No updates to the domaintools website, blog, or anywhere I can find after the auction with a recap or instructions. You have 10 days to pay, but they waste 2 business (banking) days followed by a weekend to get out payment instructions? I would think that would have been automated right after the auction close. Are they all so burnt out they took a few days off?

Jay emailed me saying they should issue an escrow mail today.
So we only have to wait.

...

By the way Mister -RJ- please look at your NP mail box when you have a minute free and give me a response. Thanks!

Hold your horses there, even Moniker takes a few days to send out something in my experience with them...seems to be industry standard. I don't understand it either, but I honestly care mostly about the transactions being completed more than anything.

Two good articles about Domain Roundtable Auction ..

First article about DomainNameNews.com blogger share his view of the auction : http://domainnamenews.com/editorial/domain-roundtable-auction-technology-auction-success/839

Second article about Jay's blog posts about 29 domains from the list .. and what were the results for these posts ? : http://domainnamenews.com/domain-sales/domain-roundtable-scorecard/840

Also, interesting stats by the same author :

EVENT | NUMBER SOLD | PERCENT | TOTAL SALES $

Moniker TRAFFIC NYC Live | 118 of 218 | 54% | ~ $10 million

Moniker Affiliate Summit Live | 39 of 194 | 20% | ~ $503,000

Moniker Internext Live | 57 of 257 | 22% | ~ $682,000

For a first auction with a new model and and bunch of other firsts, I don't think it turned out too bad. I think $3.9 million in domains (with $390,000 in commissions to Domaintools) is anything to sneeze about. As far as big sales, it's probably put them on an equal footing with afternic and sedo for the month with a company that didn't broker names before. The hype and even a few big sales helps the resale market in general, even if you didn't get a domain accepted or sold.

Here's my opinion:

Positives:
Live video of auctioneer and live bidders.
Submission process that helped hype the auction.
Blogs that helped promote the auction.
Sellers involved interactively in the acutions.
Reasonable commission and sales escrow provided.
Exclusivity of sale not an extended period.

Negatives:
Auction too long, bidders left near the end.
Most big $ domains first, so less incentive to stick around.
Too few people at the live event (did most leave for home after the show?)
Timeing pretty close to TRAFFIC NY, so some may not have gone to both events.
Too focused on .com - Should have had premium other TLD's

BTW, I did net my notice to pay Friday evening. The payment process was pretty user friendly, even with the almost 2 day delay. Still waiting to see how it goes from the seller prospective.

Jay has posted a recap on the blog this evening. It looks like they know what worked and what didn't. I do look forward to seeing their "secret announcement".
Overall, I think we pulled off a great auction and I am looking forward to our secret announcement in two weeks.

I wonder if they are going to now have regularly scheduled online auctions, more events like domain roundtable, or a whole new secondary marketplace?

I agree. Overall I was impressed. The turnout was not too bad at all, and they emerged as serious competition to SEDO and Moniker auctions. AdoptableDomains has a good point - the hype and some big sales helps the resale market.

The live video, combined in house and online bidding was extremely well done. Some glitches, but that's to be expected I guess. All in all it was a pioneering event.

There has been criticism about DT demanding reserves that resulted in many domains being sold at below the sellers' expectations - with only one bid. However, that is ultimately the seller's responsibility. If one doesn't want to sell at the suggested reserve price, better not list the domain at all.

Criticism is justified regarding the timing and length of the event (holiday in Catholic countries and late in the conference), and also the promised "bidding war" of the "industry giants" did not happen.

I also agree with AdoptableDomains that many crap .coms were listed when in fact a better turnout might have been achieved by dropping some of those and listing premium domains in other tld's. Case in point, my paper.info, although sold at the reserve price, suggests that there is interest in premium non-dotcoms.

Plus. I think they're going to make some big $$ selling their auction software!

Domain Roundtable, San Francisco, April 18th - 20th

Posted today on DomainTools Blog

Jay Westerdal said:
I am proud to announce that the fourth annual Domain Roundtable will be held April 18th-20th in San Francisco. It will be held between two really awesome events, directly after Ad Tech (April 15th - 17th) and right before Web 2.0 Expo (April 22nd - April 25th).

We have a simple formula. Domains + Ads + Web 2.0 = San Francisco 2008

This will be the first city outside of Seattle that gets to experience a Domain Roundtable in action. It will take a few months of preparation and a lot of hard work to make this next conference the best conference we have ever hosted. We hope to bring in a lot of Bay Area people and companies for the event. If you have any ideas for events or are interested in sponsorship please email sf2008 <at> domainroundtable.com. Please save the dates and prepare for an awesome domain conference. We are looking for fresh new ideas and concepts for the show. So please email us with your ideas or what you would like to see and what is missing.

Thanks.

Here are the non-coms:

Messenger.eu
(& Messenger.us) $5,400
Army.org $99,000
Locals.org $9,100
Dine.mobi $5,000
Hot.tv $35,000
Customers.eu $1,000
Foreign Currencies.eu $1,000
Paper.info $5,000
Answer.net $15,000
Poker.in $60,000

I think overall sales were reported at something like 37% of domains sold. However, looking at the above, 100% of info, mobi, in, org, and tv sold; 50% of eu, and net. The only one to perform lower than .com was .cc which was a shutout. Most of these were also $5,000+. The event was held in Seattle and no .us or .ca domain (as primary) listings?

Yes, it's nice to announce selling six-seven figure .com's. However, not everyone can afford to bid in that market, and those that do don't buy 450 at a time. I would have bid maybe $1k to $10k for a premium info/net/org/biz/us, but can't participate in the high 5 to 7 figure market. I wonder of the 1100 bidders, how many others were limited to the $25k and lower market. I'd take paper.info for $5k any day over $1k for LoveCouch.com (which didn't sell) due to generic/premium nature. I also think a couple dozen $10k secondary market non-coms would help the non-com market in general be more accepted and respected.

I posted in the DT blog a few days before the auction that I didn't understand why they were accepting .eu, .cc, and .tv, while there own service didn't monitor them but did monitor .biz, .info, and .us. If their service thinks com/net/org/info/biz/us are the primary or important ones, why don't they treat them that way in the auction. It seemed to me that they too have fallen for the hype that only .com can be "premium" domains, and excluded most one/two word other TLD's. I submitted Gold.biz, ChargeCards.info, DigitalPhotography.net, and Fish.us which I think were better and would bring more than most of the .com's I actually got accepted.
