Domain sales restrictions?

Noob question:

I have seen some references to a 60-day period from a confirmed new reg to a transfer or sale. Is this just for transfers from one registrar to another? For example, if I reg at Moniker on 1/1/09 and list for sale at Sedo on 1/8/09 would this listing be accepted? And, if sold quickly, would it transfer?

What does the 60-day period refer to and how is it applied? Is it universally applied? Are there other time restrictions for selling domains?

Thank you.

The 60 Day is referring to transfer between registrars. You can still sell a domain during that period, but you can only push the domain to another account on the same Registrar.

Just to understand this better, that means that if a domain is registered on GoDaddy, you can ONLY sell it to another GoDaddy user, correct?

Someone correct me if I am wrong. Thank you,

It means it can only be pushed to another GoDaddy.com account. Most domainers have accounts at all the major registrars so it normally is not an issue.

But there can be issues with ccTLD registered with not so "major registrars", correct?

I generally just deal in the major TLD. Someone who deals in ccTLD could probably answer that.

So, a buyer/end user would be hesitant to bid on a domain regged at a small registrar or a ccTLD European registrar, for example? Is the best course of action- in order to reach your target buyers- to have registrar accounts at GoDaddy, Moniker, Dynadot, Enom, etc.?

Speaking for myself, if I were buying a domain name, I would not want to wait 60 days while it transfers to my registrar of choice. To cover the most potential buyers, which registrars would you recommend? In terms of Sedo/Afternic, is there any particular registrar that fits better with these auctions?

Having a domain at some obscure registrar can hurt sales, especially to other domainers.

GoDaddy is the standard. They might not have the best features or interface, but I like them more because I do end user sales normally. They are like the AOL of domain registrars, even non domainers have heard of GoDaddy.

As far as domainers are concerned there are a group of about 10 Registrars I would say that are respected.

The lock is only if the domain is newly registered, of the registrant was changed in the last 60 days.

If you buy a domain with some obscure Registrar, you can normally have it transferred out. Most domains have been owned longer than 60 days.

Even if it is in a lock you can push it to an account at that Registrar, then transfer it out after the lock.

Got it! Thanks very much. A large part of being successful is not wasting time, so the choice of registrar seems very important if you intend to sell domains in any volume. Fortunately, most of my domains are at GoDaddy and Moniker, some at NameCheap and a GoDaddy reseller, NuggetNames.

The nuggetnames names can only be pushed to other nuggetnames customers (All 2.25 of them.), so that would hurt sales. (WWD reseller customers can only push to customers in their own WWD reseller.)
