Domain registrar advice

Being a newbie to domaining I have some questions after reading a lot on this great forum and in several other places.

My first question is domain registrar picking.

I've had quite a few domains I started as mini sites. I used Go Daddy and also Netfirms to register them.

I've read about 'pushing' the domain to the new owner after selling it. So this is my question.

Do all registrars allow you to 'push' the domain to the new owner?

Do domains sell better if they are registered with Go Daddy and Name Cheap?

Anything I should be aware of before using a certain domain registrar?

Thank you for any help at all :D

Hi,
Welcome to the world of domaining!
It's great that you have read a lot on this forum.
There are many registrars which support FREE PUSH for example Moniker,Name.com,Godaddy,Dynadot,DomainMonster, and so on.You can stick with Godaddy.
There is no relation between the sale price/sales performance of a domain to where it is registered. And that means only the quality of a domain matters and not where it is registered.
Registrars to avoid-1&1 [Personal Opinion]

Let me second the recommendation to avoid 1&1. There is no free push from account to account, and transferring a domain away from them can be a lengthy, painful process.

Another example of one that does have the free push is eNom, though probably not worth the price unless you get into a reseller account there. I use both eNom and GoDaddy, and I haven't had issues with either.

Hi
from what i see, most or many members here use godaddy

i recently posted a 'domains wanted" thread, looking to buy a few domains and out of over 50 something emails, most of the domains were regged at godaddy.

and most were all crap, or just not fitting the posted criteria.

so i had to edit my post and state that:

godaddy is the "least" preferred registrar of choice.

and after that, though the number of submissions dropped, the quality of the domains rose.

:)

take it for what it's worth

imo...

Do all registrars allow you to 'push' the domain to the new owner?

Most of them, but 'pushing' usually applies to generic extensions like .com/.net and a few country extensions like .us .in. If you were selling a .co.uk for example the procedure would be different.

^ As noted above, not all registrars are equal... some are good, some are ugly.

Also have a look here: Domain Registrar Reviews - NamePros.com

My advice would be to look at the quality of the control panel, the overall ease of use and reliability, the responsiveness of customer service when you need them, and not just look for dirt cheap prices. You often get what you pay for ;)

Thank you...

Thank you syncvb for your warm welcome and advise about 1and1. And thank you SlorNet for your second on 1and1 and also helping me to learn that the 'push' can be long and lengthy process.

biggie that is wonderful personal experience that I will keep in mind as I move forward : - )

sdsinc I did not know there was a difference in transferring different domain extensions. I appreciate you teaching me that. Right now as I begin I'm staying with .com until I have an idea of what I'm doing. and your information will help me as I grow and begin to be able to branch out a bit.

I really appreciate all this good advice and help!

Thank you very, very much!

Many of the registrar problems people report happen when they try to sell a name to someone else or transfer a name to some other registrar. Since many never do this they will say they haven't had problems.

I think it might be money well spent & very educational to transfer a domain to/from several of the popular registrars and see what you think of their process. How hard is it to find the EPP code, how long does it take, what changes reset the lock on transfers, etc.

If you do the testing with a "keeper" domain you will just extend the registration period a year at a time which is money you would have had to spend anyhow.

Great idea...

Great Idea mhdoc, I had not thought of that. I test everything else on my sites, testing the transfer process before I sell something only makes great sense! I'm going to go ahead and do this. Thank you!

Hi

it's not really the registrars' process per se'...

the problems with transfers may be found or not found within the cpanel of your respective domain manager or with whois details.

some just forget to unlock their domains! :)

many also may find it difficult to locate the auth code within their domain management system or they may have to send emails to the registrar to get them.

a side issue with auth codes is whether one copies and pastes or tries to types it within the message, to the buyer/recipient.

with whois, one must be sure that ALL contact info is accurate, so that you will receive the auth codes if they are sent to you by email.

i had experience once with Register.com, where i was transferring a domain from them to enom.

i initiated the transfer at enom, but i never received the authorization from Register.com, because "they" had changed the "Technical Contact" to "Register.com", thus all emails kept going to them.

this exact thing has happened to another domainer who's names are with Register.com

so not an isolated incident.

imo...

Thank you Biggie

Wow! I had forgotten about the auth codes! And I did not think to check the whois either. Your experience shows me that even though my info might be right I have to be sure all the info is correct.

Great help!! Thank you again : - )

For most people the registrar shouldn't matter too much unless it's 1&1 or a really small registrar most people have not heard and will worry about. But some people will avoid domains if they are less interested because of the registrar. I pass on listings from enom for example because I don't have an active account there. I'm moving EVERTYING I can away from Godaddy because I don't like how they do business. But I would still buy and then later transfer the domain out.

The only registrar you should really avoid at all cost is 1&1 and you should be fine.
