I started buying domain names in 2002 and dabbled here and there. In those days I often referred to myself as a domainer and I made the typical mistakes buying up domains at random.

Years later I had hover.com (was domain direct) make a script which purchased every _ _ Canada.com & _ _ Canada.ca available on the market. It cost me thousands of dollars but in the end I made some money. I sold a few for really good money which made the whole project worthwhile. Others sold as low as $995 and eventually I let the ones without inquires expire.

I started getting even more focused 2011 and re branded as MapleDots - Canadian Domain Properties

So now I am highly specialized on a specific market and sometimes I still chuckle on the randomness of the industry. I've been lucky a few times but now I would say I am far more experienced.

So now I refer to myself as a Domain Property Agent when conversing with my clients.

I have several businesses and I charge sales tax, claim expenses and run MapleDots as a real business. Far different than a lot of people who dabble, don't charge tax and hope the tax people will never catch on to them.

In total I have owned several thousand domains, some sold, some cost me way too much money and a heck of a lot of them have expired. Losses were claimed as business expenses to lower my tax base.

In closing.... I will never use the word domainer with a potential client because I have serious money invested and the business is now much more than a hobby. I look at my domains as property and I am no different from a real estate agent, mine simply happens to be internet real estate.

We prefer: Domain Investors & Brokers :cigar:

Full time business, too. Well, not much of a brokerage at present, too much work with our own assets, but soon...

I agree, "domainer" doesn't cut it. Still sounds like "cybersquatter" to end users.

Interesting! You will be a valuable namepros member with all the know how from those transactions of those several thousand domains to share @MapleDots. I look forward to your posts.

So from domaining since 2002 and those thousands of domains, the question I want to ask is - was it in the end profitable?

Also, I note you have a lot of maple domains. Did you ever manage to grab that quintessential canadian export and icon 'maple syrup' in com and ca?! i.e. "maplesyrup.ca and maplesyrup.com" in your domaining?

HeHe, just because I bought so many does not make me smart, I lost quite a bit on a lot of those domains. You can probably hand register a few of them yourself if you like. :xf.grin:

I am much more focused now and have made a total of 8 offers this month including two today in the 10 - 15k range. Mind you most of the folks I make offers to are asking 75-80k but they have been sitting on the domains a long time.

I have a Uniregistry brocker representing me on a bigger sale at the moment.

I have a few maplesyrup domains but it will be a cold day before any money is made on them. I focus on Business names, always have. Will rarely ever buy a domain name unless I see a potential to use it as a business name.

Was it profitable you ask? I had two really big ones and one currently in the works. Each one of those did more than the entire portfolio. I call it a direct hit domain, I am always looking to score more of those.

I had a number of 5k sales but only two big ones (+ 1 in the works) in 14 years. I am getting much better at predicting those now and I do NOT publish those names. I deal with them anonymously and currently have a number of great 4-5 letter .com and .ca addresses.

On average though I sell about 4 domains a year at about 5k each, everything else is like the lottery. You might get lucky a few times but it takes a long time to figure out where to get the good tickets. I hit the lotto twice and think I have the 3rd in progress but a deal is only a deal when the funds are in the bank.

I deal mostly with end users and I never call myself an investor because I do not want to give the appearance that I am profiting from a potential client. Instead I show the property by putting the domain online with a quick wordpress template and a custom designed logo. I then show them other similar sales and actually discuss how the domain can increase their business. A real estate agent makes a commission and that is how I want my clients to feel. I don't want to give the appearance of being an investor making a large profit. That works for me, might be different for others, but my system works well for me. It took a long time for me to figure it out, a lot of trial and error before I got it right.

Thanks for the detailed reply and being so upfront. Mucho appreciated!! (y)

I had MapleDomains.ca registered but HugeDomains wanted almost 3k for MapleDomains.com. I was set to buy it but then something funny happened.....

I was down in South Carolina on holidays when I ate DippinDots for the first time.
The name resonated with me and MapleDots was born. I never did buy MapleDomains.com and have never considered it again.

Cannot tell you how many times I have heard positive comments on the name.
