I started buying domain names in 2002 and dabbled here and there. In those days I often referred to myself as a domainer and I made the typical mistakes buying up domains at random.
Years later I had hover.com (was domain direct) make a script which purchased every _ _ Canada.com & _ _ Canada.ca available on the market. It cost me thousands of dollars but in the end I made some money. I sold a few for really good money which made the whole project worthwhile. Others sold as low as $995 and eventually I let the ones without inquires expire.
I started getting even more focused 2011 and re branded as MapleDots - Canadian Domain Properties
So now I am highly specialized on a specific market and sometimes I still chuckle on the randomness of the industry. I've been lucky a few times but now I would say I am far more experienced.
So now I refer to myself as a Domain Property Agent when conversing with my clients.
I have several businesses and I charge sales tax, claim expenses and run MapleDots as a real business. Far different than a lot of people who dabble, don't charge tax and hope the tax people will never catch on to them.
In total I have owned several thousand domains, some sold, some cost me way too much money and a heck of a lot of them have expired. Losses were claimed as business expenses to lower my tax base.
In closing.... I will never use the word domainer with a potential client because I have serious money invested and the business is now much more than a hobby. I look at my domains as property and I am no different from a real estate agent, mine simply happens to be internet real estate.
