Most common method is to push the domain to their account at the same registrar.

in domain industry or field, it is professionally called a domain push.

You can push the name if the person you sold it to has an account at the same registrar. If not then you need to unlock your domain and tell your buyer to initiate a domain transfer to their registrar. The other solution is to tell the buyer to open an account at the registrar you have the name then push the name. Hope this helps.

This is not a good way. If the buyer doesn't have an account at the registrar where the domain is registered then simply you tell him to open an account. I wouldn't sell a domain if a buyer doesn't agree to open an account. It costs nothing and takes only one minute.
Domain transfer can cause more risks or delay compared to domain push.

If you are selling to a reseller, then pushing makes sense.
For end users, they hardly every go through the trouble to open a new account, they will stick to the registrar of their choice.
Saying you wouldn't sell a domain if they don't set up an account at your registrar just simply doesnt make sense, nor is it professional.
You need to unlock the domain, get the EPP code, tell them to initiate a transfer after you have given them the EPP code.
You will then be notified by your registrar and you will need (in most cases) to agree to the transfer.
For large sums, it is best to use an escrow service.
If you know or trust the other person, or, have already received payment, then just go ahead and unlock and give them the EPP code.

When you push a domain you have full control on everything. You know where the domain went and when it went. Domain push is designed to change ownership. On the other hand, domain transfer is not designed for change of ownership. Only you are meant to know the EPP code. If you unlock the domain and then give away your EPP code you are asking for trouble. This time or that time you might have no trouble but one time you will.

When you give your EPP code you are making a few assumptions. You are assuming that buyer will keep this information safe and will not use it in a wrong way. You are assuming that nobody else has access to buyers email account.
Do you know what a keylogger is? Somebody else might be monitoring buyers email account or the buyer might be sharing his email account with another person. You see, there are lots of risks.

That is why you use escrow in risky situations.
No end user (or almost no end user) is going to go and create a new account just to get a domain.
They want the domain in *their* registrar.
Many end users don't even know what a domain push is.

You know, I have used both ways and each has some risks. It all depends on the situation. Generally, it would me less risky and more prudent to go thru and escrow service because there is a third party and a paper trail involved.

I have seen many times on forums where people push their domain and the other party's money doesn't go thru or other complication. For example, if someone pays you by credit card, they can still dispute and refuse to pay even after you pushed the domain.

This is an area I see changing in the future, somewhat like a clear title proves we have the right to own real estate. I was not aware that a transfer was not intended to change ownership...as posted earlier in this thread.

If you need the domain fast, or they do, a push is the only way to go. I recently sold some domains thru Moniker and then the push was to their escrow account.
