Hi,

I have a new business idea that would need the ability to look up the whois details on the ownership of a domain name. At the moment i can goto places like godaddy or nominet to get this info but when/if i get this business up and running im going to need to do anything upto 20,000 looks on a daily basis. Of course this would need to be done automatically so i need to find out how i can set up my own 'whois' look up on a domain name?
Any ideas ....

Also, does anyone produce a record of all of the domains that have been registered today?
Or is there a list published by anyone that shows all of the registered domains for the previous month?

Thanks inadvance ...

Oh, both questions are for not just .com but also country ext like .co.uk

So, you want to start a new business that you don't know about it at all ?

Doesn't most linix hosting have whois installed by default?

Can't you just run a command like "whois music-whiz.com" from php and do whatever you like with the results?

Looking up the "thick" info, that is the whois info that goes beyond registration date and nameservers, happens at the registrar of the domain. You would need to scan all the registrars which each have limits to scanning, and many have captcha as well.

The registrars put caps on queries. After a few dozens queries your IP will be rejected for a certain period of time. If you are a registrar you can ask other registrars to whitelist your IP for bulk access.

Nominet does not supply bulk whois data and they get very upset with people mining their whois data.

It is not difficult to do that. However I think that you may have completely underestimated the numbers of new domains registered each day across the main gTLDs and ccTLDs. It is more than 20K domains. While it is possible to generate new domains lists for .com TLD, the .uk ccTLD does not publish either zone files or new domains lists.

Easiest way, though it will cost money, is to utilize 3rd party services that already collect such information like DomainTools. They likely have all the info you seek.

Doing it yourself is possible, but you'll likely need to resort to some questionable tactics to get around the whois limits of most all registrars, and even registries. Think bot nets and proxies. Not all are illegal, but many are shady.

In short, check out DomainTools.com

This is not a unique business idea. Many people have already applied it.

It is also very complex to do it on a large scale. The amount of data that would be gathered daily would quickly build up and require some serious database adminstration skills to handle properly.
