Looking at a .co.uk domain name for a client, registrar company states it is taken and the whois states:

Relevant dates:
Registered on: 20-Oct-2002
Renewal date: 20-Oct-2006
Last updated: 29-Sep-2006

Registration status:
Renewal required.

How come it is still not available after nearly a year? Any ideas? My client would really like this domain name.

I have checked with several registrars and several whois - they all state the same, and that it is unavailable.

Welcome to NP Babrees.. Looking at the information you provided it looks like the domain you are trying to register had been renewed on 20-Oct-2006. This may mean that it could registered for another year. I may be wrong. Even if there is no site on the domain, it could just be sitting in someones account. If it is a really nice domain you may want to check through some of the drop catching sites ie.. snapnames, enom club drop, etc.. to see if it has gone to auction there. Well hope this helps, good luck.

Thank you. Glad I found this forum :)

That was my first thought concerning last updated date. The name is client's company name so they really would like it, but am unsure if they are willing to pay higher than usual simple registration fee.

I looked at snapnames who state it is due to expire soon.

Thank you! It seems that this one could possible fit the situation...

Renewal required
This status will be used if:

A positive renewal request has been received but the domain name has passed its expiry date and the invoice is beyond its credit terms.

The dates are still very strange though. Guess client will just have to wait and see.

This is something I have noticed - companies rebel at paying a premium for a domain. Yet the same company would pay $$$$$$ to market a hard-to-remember three word domain website and much more for a prime real estate location.

Question is how quickly will this attitude change?

Sooner than most think... media awareness converts to public awareness which eventually converts to corporate awareness.
I think we are very close!
