Domain Investment Strategies

There are many strategies to consider when investmenting in domain names today. Here are a few:

1.Market Industry [e.g. Sports, News, Health, Financial, Entertainment]

2. New Niche [ New market verticals such as Medical Procedures, New keyword phrase verticals such as Market Tumble, Federal Rescue, etc]

3. Creative Naming: [ e.g. Google, Zune, etc]

4. Generic Words [ LowFare, HybridCars, GreenCollar, etc]
The only problem here is that the market is soo saturated and good .COMS are hard to come by or are they?.......D-:

Please share what strategies that you are using and what success you have had in this regard......

Eagerly awaiting your response,

This is a business not a lottery.

Don't try to hit the jackpot by flipping a hand reg. If you can make a 20% return you're winning. Buy quality domains for mid $xx then sell for high $xx (this works with xxx, xxxx, xxxxx, etc.).

Quit wasting your money registering junk. Save your money and buy a couple of quality domains. Either that, are you better learn how to develop. IMO.

#1 Focus on quality over quantity

#2 Use Google Search Tool to find high search terms where the DOT COM has not been regged. People will tell you everything has been regged. Wrong. I've found several DOT COM and DOT NETS with 50,000+ searches a month according to Google that we unregged.

#3 Steer away from creative or brandable names becuase they your chance of selling them for alot of money is rather low. This is the domainer equivalent of playing the lotto.

#4 Steer away from TM issues like the words "Realtor" or other obvious trademarks. Many people come on here with a gem like DallasCowboys.TV. There is a reason that domain was not registered.

Domaining is just like any other business, or investment - it requires fundamental business knowledge.

If you came here just because of a few big sales that left you bright-eyed, you'll fail. much less if you don't have a business degree, and/or business experience and knowledge.

Thanks MicroGuy.

World class domain investor 'Rick Latona' agrees that there is indeed a strategy to investing in domain names. Simply put, Register Premium Names.....

First in commenting on domain name quality he comments:

"I have one question that I ask myself that is more important to me than any other question: What sort of website would be put on the name? When buyers buy a name from me, more often than not they want the name because they have some sort of vision for it. Whatโ€™s the obvious vision?" [Retrieved on December 20, 2008 fromhttp://www.ricklatona.com/

True to his statement, a marketable domain must have commercialty or true brandability when considering future domain sales to end users. Again, the best way to help the end buyer vision to become clearer is to develop the domain yourself for RESALE.

If you haven't heard of this guy, you really should review his website and sales record when it comes to domain name investing. He is by far one of the best domain name investors in the industry!!!.... Bar None!!!.....

Any thoughts,

Like the stock market there are two basic strategies: Buy & hold and quick flip. Now is not a good time for most flippers.

Buy low - you can find deals at reg fee and, sometimes, from other domainers. The trick is to find areas that are not overwhelmed by others, but have domains that will attract buyers later. This takes experience, new domainers should strictly limit their purchases.

I plan to hold my domains for about ten years, selling to any end users that show up in the meantime. Remember renewal costs are rising.
