A domain just expired on 2009-08-31 from Godaddy.com. I've been in domains for awhile, but usually don't try to pick up prem domains that have dropped.

What's the first step? Does it go to TDname first? What kind of timeframe should I be looking at before its listed there? Or should I try backordering services?

Thanks!

It goes to TDNAM somewhere around the 28-32 day after expiry if it's not renewed by the registrant. I don't recall exactly. But it will be on TDNAM for 10 days. So plenty of time to find it. If you'd like me to check the exact timing I could do so. But maybe somebody else has it on the top of their head.

I have a similar question, I thought I'd confine it in here.

Domain I wanted expired. Went through TDNAM, went through closeouts on TDNAM, no one purchased it as I just noticed it's in redemption. It's at GoDaddy.

Where should I backorder this name?

It depends.

If it's a desirable name, and it's a "must have at all costs", then it's likely to be picked up by SnapNames/NameJet/Pool, then you should backorder it at all 3. GoDaddy have to compete with those 3 when the domain actually drops. they are not competitive at the drop.

If it's not a particularly desirable name, and it's not a "must have at any cost" domain, you might want to take the risk of running the gauntlet of tasters. Assuming the big 3 don't go after the domain (and you can judge that by whether anyone has backordered it at those 3), it's still quite likely that a taster will grab the domain before GoDaddy. They might taste and drop the domain several times before it eventually drops. A GoDaddy backorder will capture the domain when it eventually drops. But you could do that for yourself manually, if you have the time.

In summary. If it's a "must have" domain, you should place a backorder at all three, SnapNames/NameJet/Pool. If it's not so important, and you are prepared to take some element of riskin getting the domain, a GoDaddy backorder would be cheaper, and doing it manually would be cheaper still.

i disagree, if the domain is already at godaddy its going to tdnam as it wont actually drop per se

"BinderGang" said it's in Redemption/went throught TDNAM already etc... This domain WILL drop, so if you want it, backorder it at Pool.com, SnapNames.com & NameJet.com.

An FYI for those interested to find out when an expired Godaddy Registered domain will hit TDNAM...

Look at TWO Expired domain auctions that end Today on TDNAM (two just to compare). Subtract Todays date from the expiry date on the whois for the domain you are looking at. (make sure you know if their are 31, 30 or 28 days in the certain months)

Take the expiry date of the domain you are interested in and ADD the number of days you Subtracted from above and ADD 10 days.

note: TDNAM domain auctions run 10 Days.

Example: Bibie.com expired 7-29-2008 and ends today. So their are 31 days in July. So 2 + 31 days in August 2 + 31 = 33 . Today is the 2nd of Sept. Add 2 more days. 2+31+2 = 35 Days from expiry date the auction will end.

So about 25 days after expiry the domain will enter TDNAM.
35 Days after expiry the domian auction will End at TDNAM.

I agree with Yofie. Or is it... he agrees with me :)

On the date it goes to TDNAM is Day 26 after expiry and it's there for 10 days.
