I was wondering if you were usually catching EXPIRING NAMES at auction or you were registering newly EXPIRED domains.

I am always registering newly EXPIRED domains, of course because they are cheap. But I feel this is a beginner's mistake and I should start to pay more to catch EXPIRING NAMES instead.

Any thoughts?

A high majority of quality expiring names are more than likely to be back backordered (using a dropcatch service) and end up in an auction.

I am not saying that it doesn't happen, though, it is extremely rare that quality domains slip through, in then which you are able to hand reg.

Let say a dropcatch service cost $59 .. if I don't win the domain at auction, do I have to pay the $59 anyways?

Nope, you will only pay if they catch your desired domain.

You do not drop catch Expiring Domains. These are domains that have not been renewed and are still under ownership by the registrar. They are auctioning them to try and get someone to buy (plus renewal) so they don't have to let the domain hit Expired status. You only drop catch Expired Domains or Deleting Domains.. You bid on Expiring Domains and the domains age will not get reset on those if you take over ownership.
