I know this is a bit morbid, but do you all have executors or brokers that you intend to use if you die?

I started thinking about how lost my wife would be trying to sell my portfolio, which spans across several registrars, has speculative value, and my take several months to find an end user.

I was thought, maybe I could write up a quick howto, and point her to this board or someone like RJ?

Be assured that many of the previous owners of good dropping domains ARE, in fact, dead. Just recently passed away (within a year).

xFactor - take my advice - get a good life insurance.

Domains are just another asset and would be part of your estate. Worst case scenario they might have to be sold off at a loss in order to cover taxes. Better case scenario the names are held in a company with limited paper value, the shares of which can be cheaply transferred to whoever you want and the names be sold off without pressure.

what a sad topic to read :(.
never thought about what will be if.... but since my sites are hosted on company located in Florida, i always was thinking, what will happen with my sites, if hurricane or something like this will destroy that company (God, never let it be please!), will i loose my sites? I mean i still will be able to transfer domains somewhere else, but what about sites, databases, email accounts, etc?
Sorry for off top, just this topic made me think about this question harder.

How depressing! :o

I have to admit this never occurred to me. What I will do is write directions for whoever I want to sell my domains when i'm 6 ft under. Can't be bothered to hire a broker for them. ;)

My best friend is gonna be kinda ticked at me, I've left instructions for him on how to keep my 32 web site/80 domain empire afloat indefinately, if something awkward were to happen, such as incapacitation/death. My wife wouldn't know how to run it all, it would take a while for her to get the terminology. Made for a nice thick packet of stuff.

While most of us here are probably quite young, it is important to think about and plan for the unexpected! I know my family wouldn't have a clue about this internet stuff, so I'll be giving this topic some thought.

You can easily spot my domains, but my password for my username is something like LI.q)n7,| so unless my parents r lucky to guess it -- it'll never happen B-)

The only challenge here, really, is finding someone you can entrust even your
own life with.

Of course, if you're a slob when it comes to managing your domains, that's a
different story. :]
