I'm curious, who are these people buying these domains for small and high dollars? Are there alot of people browsing sites like sedo looking for a specific domain name? Or maybe they typed a name they had in mind into the address bar only to see its for sale? Or maybe they just see something catchy and buy it? How does it work?

there are domainers who will search and also a lot endusers looking for an approprite domain name for their use either for coorporate, business, blog, advertising, forum , betting side or others... not easy to think of agood domainname soemtimes so see what available then just buy... some good end users rather pay few k to get a good name than think of a good one to register one at reg fee..
time is equal to money for a lot ppl...

all of the above, brokers and end users searching sedo, afternic, etc... typing in a name and finding out it's for sale leads to a few sales as well I am sure, if it sounds catchy that helps as well, There are also large companies that will register hundreds or thousands of domains as investments and just sit on them for the long haul, more places you list your domains for sale the better, sedo,afternic,forums, and try to target an area where you can find end users whether you email them directly with a professional letter or find a forum that targets the name you have for sale.
