Does Google care if you have multiple similar sites?

I have multiple domains centered around the same topic. I'm developing each of them to be their own mini site. I am hoping to have them all use the same Analytics, AdSense and Webmaster Tools account.

Does Google "punish" me for developing each site and link them to each other? Will I still get the same SEO benefits I would if a 3rd party linked their similar content site to mine?

If Google doesn't like this, should I set up a seperate email and account for each domain and if I must do this and if I do do this, am I doing something wrong?

Please help!

Thanks in advance.

it may not punish you, but having them link to each other won't really help any of them.

Ouch...is there not some way for multiple similar domains to work for each other? (aside from hoping someone clicks from one to the other?)

having a bunch of domains and linking them together is not search engine optimization.

You should not get banned as long as you don't have the sites linked together. Google will then ban you for "link farming". But unless you like to compete with yourself in teh search engines you should be fine! LOL, I would suggest making sure to optimize each site differently though to get the most results.

Both sites are on the same topic but are fully developed as different sites. They look different, sound different and aside from the privacy policy have no duplicate content.

If they link to each other, is that still link farming?

From the responses it sounds like linking them together is either going to hurt my SEO score or do absoloutly nothing.

I hate to be an amateur here but I am, so if someone can expand on this topic, I'll be greatful and one step further from amateur status.

Thanks.

Avoid the linking together

Avoid linking them together.

I remember this story about Matt Cutts, the Google Spam guy. He was sitting at a panel discussion about SEO. This guy wondered why his site was not ranking. Within a minute by checking something Cutts was able to determine the guy owned a bunch of sites and they linked together. He did this while sitting at a panel discussion. I'm sure the algro used by Google can do the same thing.

Link them together if it makes SENSE to link them together - if they're on related topics and visitors from one would be interested in another. For example: CSN Stores - they have a main site and a bunch of niche stores. They link to the niche stores from the main site, they link back to the main site from the stores. Perfectly natural navigation and makes sense for their shoppers.

Don't link apples to oranges just because you own them all and you can.

Will I still get the same SEO benefits I would if a 3rd party linked their similar content site to mine?

Much better if a related 3rd party site links to you!

Surely penalty because same topic same article. Even you rewrite it but I think Google know this is just spam site

Will linking between your sites be beneficial for the users?

If yes, then you may link them. I will suggest that you concentrate on less sites and try to add quality content. Content is important in SEO, Links will come naturally if you have excellent content in your site.

The idea of a hub and spoke arrangement has been around for a while (I think Aspen at websitepublisher.net came up with it.) You build a hub site on a more general subject and link from it to "Spoke" sites which are more specific. The spoke sites link back to the hub, but not to each other.

For example, AmericanGlassMuseum.com is a hub and it links to a number of sites about specific kinds of glass. KanawhaGlass.com for example.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to keep them seperate for now. Once I get my head around their individual performance, I might consider joining them!

Choose one main site and have the other sites one-way link to it. As for duplicate content I have a site (one page) that is re-arranged wikipedia (actually the text is a lot clearer in my version) and I get several thousand hits/month. I hear the duplication penalty only applies to certain kinds of sites.

"I will suggest that you concentrate on less sites and try to add quality content. Content is important in SEO, Links will come naturally if you have excellent content in your site."

Standard Google-speak. If you have a top 10 site the links will come, otherwise you will wait for centuries.

It doesnt matter if you have the same content but you must be careful linking them to each others.

You should link sites to those that are relevant in theme/content otherwise its not gonna be helpful if you're linking them to each other hoping that it will be having a good effect on SEO.
