If I have a large site and submit multiple site maps to Google Webmaster Tools, does this give me any benefit compared to a single sitemap?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

If you are talking about benefits in SERPs or in number of pages being indexed, then I think you cannot get any benefits via submitting multiple sitemaps.
If you have different scripts in your site: like a blog, forum etc, then you can have separate sitemaps as each script will have its own plugin to generate sitemap automatically.

The purpose of sitemap is to submit all of your urls to google & other search engines. If your site contains more than 50,000 urls, it's recommended to split the sitemap files into 2 or more.

No Its all the same as long as it is in parts or a single file. :)

So that is recommended to have one sitemap or several?

Large sitemaps should be in parts. If it is smaller then should be just one.

There is no difference. If you have more sitemaps then it won't benefit you but if there are sitemaps that have many many URL's in it then you should break it up into parts. Still the effect is same.

With a large website and you want to set different crawl rate for various sections of the website then of course multiple site map will be quite useful than a single one.

I don't think that sitemaps give any benefits in general
