Does anyone out there trade domain names? Have you ever traded a domain name? Have you ever rented a name or leased a name? Do you think this would be a good idea? Post your ideas.

Actually, I never thought of renting a domain. How would that work anyways? Someone pay like $0.50 a month and you set their name servers? That would be interesting. But on the trading note, I've done it before. It's just like buying a domain, using another domain to pay in a sense. I don't know why you would ask about that.

Renting / leasing a domain is a pretty good business at times. For example, let's say you have a domain for sale at $5000, and someone wants it but can't afford it. They can lease it from you (paperwork is a must) for an agreed upon sum and duration, let's say $200 per month for a year. You set the DNS or mask forwarding to their site (of another name or upload it to your site as subdomain or otherwise), and you're both happy. You can even do a lease, with intention to buy.

Sometimes a name can be rented for a month or a week for an upcoming event...say a race or a concert. Works well...it's just that most don't think in terms of renting or leasing.

I heard that some best names are kept only for lease.
I have heard any low end names been rent.
Maybe in the coming futue, there will be more premium names rent out instead of sale.

I think what they do is simply let the "tenant" virtually own the site and the content and develop it, while the real owner retains the wonship of the ndomain. However, it must be noted that even if that happens, the domain name owner is liable for the content on the website and can be held guilty for any illegal work on his domain.

thats why paperwork is a must to prevent liability

I've got alot of names that are parked that I'll never be able to develope. I'm sure alot of the people on here do too. If we could get more money from renting out domains than from parking....
I own some really good names that could make alot of money developed, but they are sitting parked for very little. If someone could develope one of my names and pay me a little each month from some of their revenue, that would be great. It's something to think about. There's a business idea for one of you out there to develope. Maybe even a lease to own program?
