Are there domain owners / investors who invest in brand misspellings or typo domains?

Which brands are your focus?

How and where do you monetise these domains?

Scary, unwarranted and dangerous approach to domaining. We recognise some newcomers take this approach to domaining but that's generally due to their mistaken belief that domains are a free-for-all in registrations and usage. These often end-up as threads on Nampros as "Registry cancelled my domain for no reason or warning"

Decent sized companies are already going to have their TradeMark protection in place. Smaller companies (untrademarked) offer no benefit in terms of traffic.

The only way you could legitimately hold such a domain is if you registered it ahead of The Trademark holders registration and therefore technically they hold the typo/misspelling of your domain (it happens). Even then you'll need to show preestablished or alternative usage to stay in the clear. You can just put-up a unrelated sales banner, and hope to get lucky. but these opportunities rarely exist

Find a better route for your domain investments

But what if brands(popular) have approved such traffic from misspellings? There are domain owners making 1000s of dollars by working with affiliate networks who have approvals for such traffic.

So, I guess your referring to affiliate sites that accept all manner of traffic. (probably mostly Asia /China based) lets be clear here, You as the domain holder assume all the risk, I assume you've read into and aware of those risks.

I'm confident there are domain players that are very active in keeping a revolving/pro-active inventory of income generating sites. Again mostly Asian/China based. To go down that route you'll need to have a non-compliant country accept your registrations, and payments, establish a monetary method of accepting payments that are transferrable (Not easy these days) .

Last of all, these are rarely small operations (one man band) but like any similar site, large , boiler operations. Don't forget most of your traffic is going to be of Asian origin. Western search is probably going to block your linked sites early on.

There' was a time many years ago, maybe 20 plus that we referred to this as the Wild-West of domaining. It even lasted a couple of years. The whole emphasis of this traffic has moved to the East, Very difficult, probably almost impossible to set-up these days on western servers.

If you want to go ahead, you'll probably need a good understanding of a local language/contacts or recommendations from the Asian continent. Can't see you finding any such help at NamePros.

Your best bet (as do many others) is search for similar WORDED domains (not typos) and park them. Now with a good understanding of generics and descriptive terms you'll probably be able to steer clear of any conflicts, Probably even attract some offers. This is a whole different world from Typo/misspelling of established domains/businesses though.

Please do Post some of your examples. I do think your misidentifying legitimate alternative domains, to targeted business typos.

This is NOT a fine-line by most interpretations but it is often a misunderstood 'fair usage' . Knowledgeable Businesses (legal aspect) can be reluctant to challenge these due to fair usage and interpretation . Trade Mark offices rarely get these thing wrong these days, Problems tend to come as descriptive (unrelated terms) move into common and popular usage.

Things can appear very vague. but trust me they become very clear when you nail that domain to your mast

Domains like cheepoair.ca, fiverr.com.in, rentalkcars.com etc. which obviously are typos for popular brands globally and not just Asia.
