Do you Domain full time or part time? why and what got you into it?

My profession/trade which is basically truck driver all though the last year I worked was on the management side, Managing a small fleet of drivers...I got a class A cdl license back in late 1999 bought my first domains in 2005...Stayed in the transportation business until the beginning of february 2007 at which time I got laid off due to the company going out of business.

Since this wasn't the first time I'd worked for a company that had relocated out of state or went out of business this weighed heavily on mind on whether to get another trucking job which are in very high demand since there is a shortage of drivers in the U.S or take full advantage of the time I would have learning how to profit from my domains.

I can gladly say it's December 23 and has been approximately 10 months of long hours on the computer learning everything I can learn..I haven't gotten laid off, manage my own time, still have my cdl but earn more than I could at any Truck Driving job....I actually turned down a driving job recently offering $1,300 per week

Still so much I have to learn domaining...I know i've just broke the tip of the iceberg and look very forward to learning how to advance from this point

If I ever work for someone else again I would like it to do with domaining :tu:

I sort of stumbled upon this "domaining". I'm doing this as part-time now. Domaining contributes about 5% of my total income.

Back in 2006, I was trying to register a good name for a website I wanted to developed. I couldn't register the dot com that I wanted (cause they were all regged). So I Googled for some expert opinion and found NP. I asked "Should I register long domain dot com, or short dot net?" plus many more newbie questions about domain names. After that I disappeared for about 1 year plus, developing my domain.

Then about 5 months ago, I had another "great" idea to develop another domain. This time, I stumbled upon TDNam. I paid the membership fee and browse through the listings for a domain that I like. Somehow, (I don't know how) I suddenly saw a big pot of gold staring right at face. I bought some domains from TDNam and sold it for profit. I made some bad purchase along the way. I was determined to learn more and refine my knowledge in domains so I could make better buys. I knew what I needed and immediately typed "namepros.com" and here I am back after 1 year plus.

That is how I got into domaining.

Funny that I ran into this post, I was just talking about it on a blog on 11 Dec.

I have been domaining part time since 1999. Made alot of decent cash along the way selling names. October was a good month sold $12K in domains. It has its ups and downs. What is needed is smart business sense to make decent profit.

As I stated earlier, I posted this on a popular domain blog stating that 90% of domainers are part time. I honestly feel this is true. On December 11, after posting, I decided to see if the domain was registered. Found the following names available and registered them. No million dollar names, but names that simply fit the 90% in the industry and make sense for a business model in the industry.

DomaingPartTime.com
PartTimeDomaining.com
DomainerPartTime.com
PartTimeDomainer.com
InvestingPartTime.com

The key thing to remember as a part time domainer is to register/buy names that meet a service. It is not about quantity, but quality of names that will guarantee profits and sales. Save your money and make smart domain purchases.

I do this part time. Started this at the beginning of this year with some .mobi names then started branching out from there. Came across NP from a webmaster forum.

This is a hobby. Presently, domaining contributes about minus 2% of my yearly income! :hehe:

It will never be anything more than an enjoyable past time....hopefully, I'll make a smallish profit in 08.

Same story here.. Didn't seriously invest ($XX,XXX) in domains until this February. Have made considerably more doing this part-time than at both my full time jobs combined.

I domain part-time, but I actually earn more buying and selling domains than I do at my full-time job as a market researcher. I've dabbled in domaining as a hobby for a few years, but I didn't get seriously into it until I joined NamePros and without NP I never would have taken that leap.

Discovered domaining while exploring new areas of investment, therefore, part-time/investment/hobby/learning status currently.

It fits my criteria: no employees, portable, low overhead, flexible hours.
The last thing I want is a job - the one I have pays well and allows incredible flexibility but took many years of formal education.

Happy Holidays to all

I'm a student and this is pretty much a part time thing. It's a ton of fun but I am nowhere near a point where I could live off of domaining (or online revenue for that matter).

I owned a small PPC site in the past and heard some about Domain Parking during that time. But never learn domaining serious before Sept. 2006.

I am still a parttime domainer. I think that I am more experience than last year in searching/evaluating domains. Curently I buy more but sell less. I believe most domians I have are worthy of investing.

Hope to have much better business in 2008 then I mau think about quite my current boring job :)

one year hobby

Domaining is just a hobby for me. I have been at it about 1 year and do it primarily to avoid watching t.v. Otherwise I would be working on my primary business as a Custom Builder. I have high hopes that this could be more lucrative someday. Just need to stay at it.

Not enough money in the domaining field to do it full time. Probably less than 100 people in the world would make enough from domaining full time. Starting a company on a fully developed domain would but thats not really domaining then. Its a fun hobby though for now.
I have been a full time domainer now for 2 years! Income of $xxx, xxx this year! I will hit the Seven figure mark and that is one of my goals. If you think there is not enough money in the domaining field, that is your opinion, but I strongly disagree with you! Heck, One domain could put you in the 7 figure mark! Sahar didn't think much of Spyware.com when he registered it several years ago!

I do think that Developing is a "Newer" MUST for domainers!

I helped in getting Spade to go full time, this year and I know he loves it as he posted before! He asked me several times, "are you sure" but I knew he had what it takes. You HAVE to think outside the box! Don't do what others are doing. Be a Leader, not a follower! I come up with new "tricks" almost on a daily basis! If I told you the prices I paid for some domains, you would think I was doing something illegal. If I told you that I Hand Registered 25 LLLL.com's threw out the past couple of days, you wouldn't believe me! I will hand register over 1,000 LLLL's threw this new year! Why pay $50, when you can get them for $7.00 . Think outside the box and figure out a way! Because there is a way!

It never hurts to "partner" up with a fellow domainer! Bounce idea's, talk about domains etc. Justin and I talk daily and it's helped us greatly and continues to!

If you want to be a full time domainer, you have to put in the hours and think outside the box and be a Leader! Set the trends, don't tag along. If something is not working, make a change!
