"morality is contextual, we agree upon it, its a cultural language, like speaking English"

do you believe machine will ever be conscious ?

i think that what we are doing in this forum, on the internet dialog, is exchanging emotion, we are digitalizing emotion

when we will have computer as developed has our central nervous system, we will be able to do genetic on then, having a real human body i mean, perfect android

i think the only way a computer could become alive then is with love

human baby let them self die when they don't receive human contact after birth

At the deepest level of being you are one with all that is. Realize this and you become consciousness itself. This is all there is!

i can't really see that happening... it seems that the best machines can do is mimic and act like they have consciousness... or perhaps i'm just too shortsighted? lol

it will never happen IMO
reminds me of that movie with robin williams playing a robot that comes to life
he was the only one all the others were just programmed very well

When you think about it, humans are really just a complex organically-based machine.. as for conciousness, there's one school of thought that we aren't truly "concious" a great deal of the time anyway.

To answer your question, I think we'll have machines exhibit some minor level of self-awareness within 20 years or less, probably much less. Technology seems to make quantum leaps.

I saw that, it was actually quite good until the ending. However, far from possible now.

Good Question!!!

In 1993 Vernor Vinge, a mathematics professor at San Deigo State wrote an essay titled:
"The Coming Technological Singularity"

Whether you subscribe to this line of reasoning or not, its a good read.

Under the present 0's and 1's, there are no options for creative artificial thought, although there have been reported examples (but unverified) of systems that when faced with an option, chose.

Some of the most advanced work along these lines is being done by Symantec,in trying to predict future attacks.

Trying to break that time/space plane...

Peace,

This is quite ironic - I was watching Terminator II when I saw this thread, lol.
Personally, I think machines may become consious in a few decades.

Yes, I do surf the internet and watch movies at the same time.

A new chip being developed that can re-create thoughts is pretty amazing stuff:

Bergerโ€™s research teamโ€”an all-star roster of neuroscientists, mathematicians, computer engineers and bioengineers from around the countryโ€”has so far managed to reproduce only a minute amount of brain activity. Their chip models fewer than 12,000 neurons, compared with the 100 billion or so present in a human brain. Yet researchers within the field say that even this small number represents a stunning achievement in the field of neuro-engineering. โ€œItโ€™s the type of science that can change the world,โ€ says Richard H. Granger, Jr., a professor of brain sciences who leads the Neukom Institute for Interdisciplinary Computational Sciences at Dartmouth College. โ€œReplicating memory is going to happen in our lifetimes, and that puts us on the edge of being able to understand how thought arises from tissueโ€”in other words, to understand what consciousness really means.โ€

Personally, I don't think conciousness resides within the brain in a biological sense.. if so, where? I think conciousness resides somewhere outside the body, which simply taps into it like a radio receiver on a specific wavelength.

When your consciousness is directed outward, mind and world arise. When it is directed inward, it realizes its own Source and returns home into the Unmanifested.

It depends on your definition of consciousness.

I agree with the poster above. However, according to my definition, I would say no (at the moment). I believe that machines could eventually be built to have intelligence almost on par of humans, but I'm not exactly sure if they could be "conscious"...that's a pretty good question and has my imagination acting up. :)

Computer love? I would love to see that... :hehe:

Forget the definition of consciousness, you need to figure out the definition of computer. Under no circumstances could a machine EVER do anything it wasn't programmed to do.

Consider a chess program. Wouldn't that be a decision-making process? After all, why does the computer move his rook instead of his bishop? Didn't it have to decide?

No. The computer has a preset list of formulas, and it uses the one best suited for the situation. Also, dig a little deeper. Why does the computer even want to win at chess? Because it was programmed to do so.

I fail to see how consciousness can exist without life. A computer is nothing more than steel and silicon. It is only a tool for people.

Under no circumstances could a living creature ever do anything it isn't programmed to do in its DNA.

A living creature is nothing more than a carbon-based collection of cells. It is only a method of keeping the molecule DNA in existance. (Now THAT is a pessimistic view of life - true though)

I do think it is possible.. One of these days..

And when you speak of Machines/Robots and Love.. you remind me of BattleStar Galactica episodes:)

Love/Compassion is the most important human quality IMO!

:bingo:

Although the question might be fun to think about, it is absolutely ridiculous at the same time. Machines can only do what they are programmed to do -- nothing more.

That's a really interesting way of putting it.
