Do people more often directly type into the browser or into a search engine?

Wasn't sure where to post this, but I figure this section would more likely know the answer. What's more common, a direct type in xxxxxx.com into the browser or xxxxxx.com into a search engine.

For example, I have seen people when they want to visit lets say cnn.com type it into Google and then click on the resulting site URL rather than typing cnn.com into the browser in the first place. So, which do people do more?

I hear you. I agree. Don't have any solid numbers. I suppose I'm more interested in the ratio between the two situations.

There has been very little research into this, so it's hard to say. Generally speaking I would say the ratio is 20 or 30 to 1, exact match search to type-in. Although the search is probably higher for longer domains that require more accuracy.

Thanks sbweb, I have seen that ratio before and it is about right for my domains that receive a lot of type in traffic.

Another stat I'm interested in is how much traffic a hyphenated two word domain loses to a non hyphenated name.
