Do I need to trademark such a site?

Hi,

Do I need to trademark a domain name and community/social site of an ethnic group?

Is it possible?

Should I?

I'm no legal expert, but I don't think anyone "owns" a name of an ethnic group so I should be okay.

What do you guys think?

in our country usually ethnic groups are classified as ngo so if you have a ngo - non-government organization but dealing with ethnics group, you need to trademark every product you have. well, it will still depend on what country you live and the tm policies regarding it.

Say the trademark application is approved, what rights would the owner have?

It's not like you can go file a lawsuit against every other Russian community site domain owner with "russian" in the domain name. Right?

I am new to trademarking laws, so I am most likely confused about its purpose.

The trademark owner would have exclusive rights to the trademarked term (ie russian.org) for the class for goods/services they obtained the trademark for (ie bicycle seats)
