Does successful businesses still care about having the .net version of their .com domain name?

Let's say I own something like f a s t c a r s.net, do you recommend approaching the owners of the .com version? Do you think companies still care about the .net version?

If it's a generic name like FastCars, there's no harm in approaching the .com owners. Some might be willing to give you a few hundred dollars for the name.

However, I don't think enough companies care enough to make it worthwhile to invest in those .net names for that reason alone.

My opinion: If the name is registered in a lot of extensions I would think the .net would be valuable, but if they just have the .com and no other extensions are registered, then they probably wouldn't want the .net enough to pay more than reg fee for it

For me, I paid $1495 for biix(dot)net. Most of the time I don't buy the .net version of my active business, but for some of the more complex ones, it makes for a great test environment.

Once you have a serious business going you need to have a separate development environment, so I'll typically use a .net or .org.

The reason most businesses will buy the .net is to protect their brand from competitors. Either within their industry or confusion with a brand outside their industry.
