Development is great, we talk about it alot, some are into it, some want to learn. I am pro development, with a complete understanding of all it entails and having a business plan.

First off I am only talking to people doing this as a business not a hobby or for fun.

You need to think what you are going to do once a site is developed.

How are you going to make money off the site ?

Is the topic of the site something you enjoy, so putting in a lot of time is worthwhile ?

Who else is in the niche ? How do you differ ?

Developing a site especially with video content that has no plan may cost a lot of money in people looking at free videos (BANDWIDTH) then leaving without you making anything.

If you are developing you are really starting a small business that needs money, energy and a lot of time spent keeping it sharp and on top of the competition.

I don't believe that Pay Per Inclusion will work with Videos. Here is why, PPI advertising is based on CPM (revenue per 1000 video views). With bandwidth costs, you would need an off the chart CPM rate to pay bandwidth, pay your sales team, pay your marketing budget, and eek out a profit.

The high CPM rate would cause your sales team to be an fundamental disadvantage vs competitors if they charge PPC or PPA/PPL.

That was what I was saying. I agree 100 %

Bandwidth cost was a huge concern for me as well.
With youtube offering API for upload, I've taken advantage of that.
Also, I've looked at how channelme.tv worked.
It saves bandwidth by embedding videos from other sources or uploading to 3rd party.
I've learned and utilized this method.

I'm just taking it one step at a time.

I've done research on ad publishing methods, but I will not be really using them until I get a solid traffic and many repeat visitors.

YouTube, while a short term fix - is not a long term solution IMHO. They will have the same economics (although they will have economies of scale) and will be forced to put up more advertising - in front our your videos - cutting down you own ad inventory space.

I agree. I will only be giving youtube or related sites more traffic/revenue(through ad maybe). Although I want to upload videos on to my own server, for me, I don't think I can afford to do so or last long. I'll have to start slow, and hopefully, if things go well, I'll have enough to start hosting videos on my server (depending on the name I've developing).
Even for marketing... I'm going to do a lot of bum marketing lol...

Lets look at Pay per Lead as an example. PPL is based on the principle of 10%. One of out every 10 will convert.

So if you show 10 videos, then one viewer will convert to a lead that generates $5-$50 for your business.

That is an effect CPM rate of $500-$5,000.

There is no way any internet sales person, no matter how good they are - can get that CPM rate.

It covers the bandwidth cost of the 10 video views with alot of room to maneuver.

Ah, but you're using logic! Seriously, though, you know that most people dive in headfirst without thinking it through. I have a friend who frustrates me constantly with her "special" version of accounting. She makes a product that she sells at fairs. She'll go to the fair, make $1,000 and say to me, see! It was worth the trip. I say - but what did it cost to make the item. What did it cost you in gas to get there, what did the hotel room cost where you stayed so you could be at the fair for two days. . .

Oh, if you want to count all of that stuff. . .

It's fine if it's a hobby and you enjoy the process, then the money is just a bonus but if it's a business, you need to treat it like one and that means making decisions with your head and not your heart.

From my prospective, bandwidth is one of our cheapest cost items and very affordable. Marketing/Advertising, Salaries, tech support.....all much higher costs than bandwidth. I think this is the point EQ was trying to make in this post.

Our bandwidth cost is 1/100th of our total cost to do business.

This is a valid concern that I myself brought up yesterday with a Google representative and this is not how Google intends to leverage videos uploaded by individuals or small companies to YouTube.

One of the things that our investors like about Qoof is that we don't have a bandwidth cost problem. We host and stream our own videos ever since VideoEgg shut down that aspect of their service, but we charge our clients .03 per video view and they are happy to pay us.

I agree completely. There seems to be some myth about bandwidth being very expensive. It's a very small percentage of the overall cost of doing business.

In my case, I setup my tv site with mogulus channel embedded, and targeting mainly China and Taiwan users. However, China users experience a serious delay, while Taiwan users have no problem at all. Since it's almost the same distance between US and the two areas, I guess this is caused by different network bottleneck among countries or even national firewall related issue.
I am now looking for a hosting service in Hong Kong or Singapore which hopefully can provide me a stable and fast data transmission, since itโ€™s more close to my target clients.

For hosting overseas, I suggest you check out the factor first.

It's good to hear that bandwidth cost is not much :)
I think I'll make some videos in the future for my sites if given the opportunity.
