Developing a Shop?

I keep wanting to develop a online store, however I got some things I don't understand about how it works.

I know for the shop part itself, like the cart and checkout and whatnot I'd need a script, but my question is about porduct. Would I personally have to order a ton of merchandise beforehand then just ship it from my house, or can is there companies, which you "affilate" with and advertise their products on your site as your own, and when purchased, the profit is split and they send out the goods for you?

Anyone with experience please help me out, as I hope to sometime develop a sporting goods store similar to www.eastbay.com .

There is quite a few things you will need to get knowledge about when opening an online shop. I would suggest that you start out with a site with affiliate links and if you get success can you consider opening a real store.

Do some research on 'oscommerce' and drop shipping.
