Hey guys,
I posted this in response to an existing thread, but since that response, only 9 people have actually read it. Seeing that this is related to the original topic, but can be different enough for a new thread, I decided to start one.

The original thread is Free Domain Valuation Sites.

I'm doing a lot of research and a lot of learning lately. Never heard of Estibot until now... looks like a great tool. I've begun to bookmark some things, and have added this to my list.

I'm wondering, how much do you guys trust free valuation sites like these? I mean, at the end of the day, the value of the domain can only be determined by negotiation and humans, the way I see it.

I bring this up because there's a domain I'm thinking about buying that Estibot lists as being worth $80 (much more than the asking price of the seller). My research here gives it (the domain I'm thinking about)a score of 900 (I saw this "do it yourself valuation tool" in the Stickied "100 Tools" thread).

So, what is your opinion on the accuracy of these tools, valuation sites, etc...? How much of your decision to buy or sell a domain at a given price is based on these?

Your right and I do not like these services.

They can be helpful finding certain information, but always remember its worth whatever the buyer believes it's worth or how you choose to monetize it.

So don't type it in a believe your sites worth $50,000, when its really worth $5,000 at most. But in reality a buyer can offer $1 million, you can make $1,000/month, or you won't make anything but reg fee.

I would use the sites as an extra source, not as a real answer.

I am a frequent user of the Estibot site. The values given are usually a lot more than other domainers will pay you (I have some mid-$$$ infos for sale right now for $12). If you find an end user they may pay several (or many) times the Estibot price.

An $80 Estibot appraisal usually would not be of any interest to me. Sometimes Estibot will over- or undervalue a name, it is just a program, after all, and there is no code for "eye appeal". So it is possible that it is a worthwhile domain, but the odds are against it (literally).

I don't see any way around putting in many hours familiarizing yourself with the prices in a given market segment. Depending on how big a market segment you're looking at, this could take months, even years. It's much easier to gain a handle on prices if you focus on a small niche and diversify from there as you gain more experience. Automated tools are good resources but definitely not something that would make/break a buying decision I had.

Thanks guys. This is helpful, and has some good things to think about. I have begun to learn that domaining definitely takes a LOT of GOOD and HARD work and research. Before I do purchase domains, this is what I intend to do.

I have read on other places in this forum the suggestion to focus in on one sector. This seems to me like a wise idea one that makes sense. Knowing the sector WELL will not only help me (or whoever is buying the domain) to have a better idea of what the domain price usually would be, but also how big the market is for the sector, especially through the internet, how many visitors to estimate receiving, etc...

(I'm not going to get that domain, by the way)
